Halo 4 to Make Appearance at Microsoft Spring Showcase?

Fans of the Halo series looking for news on Halo 4 are in luck. Rumor has it that the cybernetically-enhanced super-cat may be out of the bag at the end of the month, in the form of a Microsoft Spring Showcase reveal in San Fransisco.

A photo of what looks like a portion of an article in the Finnish gaming publication, Pelaaja, was tweeted today.

The article states that Microsoft will be showcasing Halo 4 at their Spring Showcase, which is set to be held on February 29th in San Francisco. IGN later chimed in, announcing that they have an invitation to this event, although they make claim that they were unaware of any Halo 4 showcase.

However, my gut tells me that if Halo 4 is going to be there, the event will likely revolve around it . February 29th is the leap day, which comes every four years. Four years. Halo 4. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but if I was a marketing specialist I’d be jumping all over that shit.

Even more interestingly, the invitation states that the Spring Showcase features “hands-on with some of the biggest experiences coming to Xbox 360 in 2012.” Congratulations Microsoft, my interest has been piqued. However, interesting or not, currently we can’t call it anything more than just a rumor, but the moment more info comes up, you’ll be the first to know.

Square Enix Working on Unannounced Title, Could It Be Kane and Lynch 3?

Producer of Final Fantasy Tetsuya Nomura has said that Square Enix have a ‘secret team’ working on an unannounced game, potentially Kane and Lynch 3.

Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famistsu, he said:

There is also a secret team working on an unannounced title, so there is a chance that some information about that will be announced this year too, please continue looking forward to these announcements.

Ooh, you big tease. Unfortunately, it turns out this might just be Kane and Lynch 3, as the trademark Square Enix registered for a subtitle of “Sleeping Dogs” we reported on last week suggests a link to that series. I say “unfortunately” because I have played a Kane and Lynch game.

I don’t know what it is about Kane and Lynch, but even seeing the name makes me feel like strangling something. Some parts of the first game provided me with the most frustrating moments of my gaming life- because of extremely poor game design. It just felt lazy- like everything in the game was a first draft. Let’s hope this one can actually resemble a game this time, if it’s indeed real.

Rumor: Nintendo Condsidering Name Change for Wii U

Sources close to Nintendo are suggesting that the company is reconsidering the Wii U‘s name.

CVG reports that after public confusion about the difference between the DS and 3DS, Nintendo are in talks with a view to a Wii U name change. It’s no wonder, really- given that Nintendo had to resort to adverts that stated ‘It’s not a DS, it’s a 3DS.’

With the new console using the same grey-on-white colour scheme as the Wii, as well as the single leter difference between the names, it’s easy to see why this is happening. Hopefully this rumour is a true one, and we get a decent name that Nintendo will be able to sell.

Next Xbox Could Have Radeon HD 6670-Like Chipset

The next Xbox will reportedly have six times more graphical power than the current model, using an AMD 6000-series chipset.

According to sources close to IGN, production of the Radeon HD 6670-like hardware will begin at the end of 2012 with a view to the console’s release in the 2013 holiday period. Developers will be able to access the new hardware in August.

Aside from the 600% power increase, the new chipset allows DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. Expect Microsoft to try to get us to ignore that the 6000 series is already outdated in the PC market. Still, it’s nice to have a little more proof that there’s a new Xbox coming along soon enough.

Dead Space Developer Working on New Online Shooter IP?

Visceral Games, developer of the superb Dead Space games, is reportedly working on a new multiplayer shooter.

This EA job listing gives the game away, asking for a Game Designer to help with a “thrilling online action shooter game.”

Most importantly, the ad notes:

“This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a bold new franchise which is a cornerstone for a new EA Games Studio.”

What would you like to see come of this? Personally I’d love a survival horror shooter done properly. Killing Floor is a great game that bills itself as such but it’s just not scary enough. If the tenseness of Dead Space could go into an online shooter that would be great.

UK Magazine Claims Syphon Filter 4, God of War IV to be Announced Next Month

According to UK gaming magazine PLAY, both Syphon Filter 4 and God of War IV will be formally announced in February. Syphon Filter 4 is reportedly in development at SCE London Studio, and is rumored for a Winter 2012 release.

“As far as our spies tell us, Syphon Filter 4 will be announced and released during 2012 – they’re not often wrong either. Developed by SCE London Studio (once thought to be Sony Bend), it will see a return to the world of shooting, espionage and Gabe Logan’s superb name.”

God of War IV is rumored to have a release date at the beginning of 2013.

Until officially confirmed, this news is speculation and rumor.

Sony Denies PS4 E3 2012 Announcement, How Much Longer Must We Wait?

Recent rumors be damned! While talking with CVG at a Vita launch event, Sony Computer Entertainment President, Andrew House, said that the company was planning a new console announcement for E3 2012. He then commented on the longevity of the PS2 to illustrate the fundamental differences between their logic and that of their competition.

“I don’t think we’re contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point … one thing I always point to is that, somewhat in contrast to our major competitors, we have, particularly with PS2, managed the length of the lifecycle and ensured its profitability for our publishing partners for a much longer lifecycle than has been true of the competition.”

Supporting the statements made by his colleague, Sony Corporation Representative Corporate Executive Officer and Executive Deputy President, Kaz Hirai, shared the following with press at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES):

“I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that.”

Simple math tells us that we are probably not going to be able to get our hands on a PS4 until 2016, but simple logic tells us that hype building machine will start well before then, so while we may not hear anything about PS4 at this year’s E3, the real announcement can’t be that far away.

Will The PS4 and Next Xbox be Announced at E3 2012?

Nintendo’s response to slowing Wii sales was to announce the Wii U at E3 last year, hoping to leapfrog both Microsoft and Sony with the next generation of consoles. When they announced that their intentions of having the Wii U out by 2012, everyone shook their head amusedly and with a sarcastic smile said, “Oh Nintendo.” Sure enough, the Wii U’s release has been delayed.

MCV reported today that Microsoft and Sony will both announce their next iteration of consoles at E3 this year. The new reveals would the outshine Nintendo’s announcement of the Wii U’s final specifications and price point, effectively nullifying Nintendo’s plans to leapfrog its competitors.

Since both Microsoft and Sony are announcing their new consoles so soon, assuming that this rumor is true, I don’t expect to see much beyond some pretty pictures of the PS4 and Xbox 720 boxes and maybe some “gameplay footage” that they’d dig up. Still, if this rumor does prove true, E3 2012 will be an exciting time, indeed.

Is a New Xbox (“Xbox Next”) Coming in 2013?

Develop seems to be on a roll today. Just earlier they reported that the PS4 was in the works, and now we have news of a new Xbox that may be titled the ‘Xbox Next‘.

Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility.

They’ve also reported that Lionhead is working on a project named ‘Fable Next’, which will launch alongside the new console. Reports also say EA already has next gen xbox dev kits in house, but everyone has so far denied these claims… obviously.

Microsoft has refused to comment so until we have anything more solid, this is another one for the rumor mill.

Did you expect a new Xbox or Playstation by 2013? I’ll reserve my judgement for now.

Sony Studios Begin Work on PS4, Still a Few Years Out

According to a “trusted source” who spoke to Develop, several Sony first-party development studios have begun the preliminary stages of various game projects intended for the PlayStation 4. The source did not confirm which of Sony’s sixteen internal studios are working on said projects.

With projects in early preliminary stages, the PlayStation 3 still selling very strong after a recent price cut, and the launch of the PS Vita early next year, many in the industry believe the PS4 is still a few years off. Possibly holiday season 2014.

PS3 owners shouldn’t be worried anyway. The PS2 had strong Sony support for over a decade, which is what the plan was for the PS3 as well.

Until we hear more from Sony, this story will be filed as a rumor.

Is Fable IV Set To Release In 2013?

Fable: The Journey may have been just announced a few months back, but is a full-fledged Fable title in the works for 2013? According to the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine the rumor section stated:

“Look for the Fable cycle to continue with a proper, controller-based Fable IV in 2013.”

As Fable lover, let me be the first to say I hope this is accurate. Sorry Peter, but you can’t convince me with Fable: The Journey after you stated there will be no melee or ranged attacks in the game.

Is Crytek Working On A New Shooter IP?

A job listing from a current Crytek staff member reveals a new shooter IP is in the works. The LinkedIn profile of Gameplay/Animation Programmer David Ramos has revealed Crytek is apparently at work on a new IP for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC for the past year.

What’s even more interesting is somewhere in between August, 2008 and now. Ramos was working on a new third person shooter IP that was later canceled. ex-Technical Artist/Character TD, Dimitry Kachkovsk’s resume also revealed a title in production between May 2007, and December 2010 by the name of “Redemption”.

The game wasn’t listed as a third person shooter, but it was in development during the same time frame when Ramos was working on a third person shooter IP. I think you can put two and two together.

Crytek is crrently working on the Kinect title Ryse, which was formerly known as Codename Kingdoms.

Has Resident Evil 6 Been Revealed? Are Details Coming September 15th?

It appears Resident Evil 6 will be heading our way sooner than we expected. According to sources, the image was sent from a behind closed doors Capcom press event during this years annual San Diego Comic-Con.

The image portrays what is believed to be the official logo for the game, including a date stamped 15-09-11, September 15th 2011. Which coincidentally enough happens to be the start date for this years Tokyo Game Show. While nothing is confirmed and this is 100% pure speculation, the logo itself looks very real indeed. We’ll keep you updated as the story unfolds.

Ultimate MvC 3 May Get 12 New Characters and a Budget Price

I know more than one gamer who isn’t happy with the current selection of DLC characters for the smash hit Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. The game, which has only had 2 fighters released since its February release, may be receiving an “Ultimate Edition” that may include up to 12 more characters as well as Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine.

This would certainly explain the lack of DLC releases by Capcom other than a few lackluster shadow modes and alternate costumes; if this little rumor is true then I may forgive Capcom for dropping support for their title so early. New character details don’t exist because this is still a rumor as of yet, but If the images of Doctor Octopus and Frank West on the original MvC3 disc is any indication, we could be looking at something pretty special.

Let’s hope if this does come to fruition there’s an upgrade DLC pack so that I don’t have to drop another $40 or so dollars on a game that I’ve already played thoroughly. I wouldn’t mind having a few extra characters to get the last mission mode achievement though. You guys know what I’m talking about. Seriously, it sucks.

Look for a more formal announcement (maybe) at Comic-Con.

Is The Zune Marketplace on Xbox Live Revamping to a Streaming Service?

According to a new report, Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace may soon offer a streaming subscription option. Citing an Anonymous source at Micosoft’s Redmond office, The Daily claims the Zune Service could become an additional source of streaming for the Xbox 360 alongside Netflix and Hulu.

It is unknown whether this will be part of the console’s streaming TV service announced at E3 or whether it could be a component of the Xbox Live Diamond TV. Either way this is exciting news for 360 owners. We’ll keep you updated when we get new information

Is Sony Planning To Redesign PSN?

Reports are coming in that the Playstation Network might be receiving an all new makeover.

According to Reg Hardware, Sony is currently working on a complete makeover of the Playsation Network service. This new look will supposedly step up to the likes of Xbox Live and Steam opposed to what it currently offers.

These changes will affect the Playstation Store rather than the XMB itself. Reports claim Sony is currently market-testing the new design to de-clutter the screen in which the new look is ”an aesthetic layout with logically marked sections and rolodex lists”. Features include an all new live search system for both movies and games which will features details such as: developers, casting, genre, etc to the right hand side of the screen.

Similar to XBL, Sony plans to add an all new “Deal of the Week” section as well. Among all that, Sony plans to scrap their currently blue color scheme in exchange for “ultra bright colors on a black background”.

If these reports are true it will be a little disappointing to know only the Playstation Store will be affected instead of the full service. Especially considering these reports claim Sony wants to up it’s service to be on par with XBL, which has received quite a few makeovers itself. Including one this fall.

Is Codemasters Already Working On a New Racing IP?

A job listing over at Codemasters facebook page has revealed that the studio’s working on a new racing IP.

However, no specific details were revealed to clues on what the project might be. Codemasters most recently launched their anticipated rally racer Dirt 3 which we gave a resectable 8.5, and already stated Grid 2 is in the works and dated for next year. So what could their next project be? Dirt bikes? Street racing? Kart racing? What ever it is, you should be excited.

Codemasters’ next racing title F1 2011, is due out in September for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. 3DS and PSVita versions are in the works.

Will Mass Effect 3 Have Co-Op Gameplay?

During the initial media blowout for Mass Effect 3 by Game Informer earlier in the year, rumors came out surrounding multiplayer for the third entry in the franchise. Producer Casey Hudson was quick to debunk this rumor, which had fans crying with joy. Now, it seems things have changed in the past few months, because OXMUK is reporting that Mass Effect 3 will indeed have 4-player co-op with “competitive elements” and “original missions made for online.”

For what it’s worth, the move does make sense. Shepard has always had a friend or two on his planetary escapades. There’s no telling whether or not this’ll be similar to Uncharted 2′s co-op mode, where Drake and friends had adventures separate from the main story mode or co-op within the campaign (please let it be the former). Bioware has yet to comment on the matter, so for now it’s just wishful thinking. But think about it: how awesome would it be to combine powers with your friends and coordinate attacks like an elite space marine squad?

Hell, if you think this isn’t true, would you have believed ME3 would have Kinect support if i told you that a few months ago? Yeah, me neither.

“PS Vita” Name Confirmed Through Sony E3 Website?

If you’re a betting man, it’s almost time to bet the bank that Sony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP) will officially be called the PlayStation Vita. What’s changed you may ask?

It seems details buried in the HTML source code for Sony’s official E3 website seem to confirm that the future handheld’s official name is the “PS Vita.”

Of course as far as stories go this is still a rumor because this could be a game sony is playing with us or Vita could be an internal codename. Although this information does match the information we received earlier this week from a reliable source.

Either way, evidence is mounting and in the near future we could be playing La “Vita” Loca (yeah, bad joke).

Sony Is ‘Not’ Working On The PS4

A few days ago we reported that Sony had commenced development of the next Playstation. We, and the rest of the gaming press were confident of this based on a statement from Sony’s Executive VP and Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato who said;

“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

Today a Sony spokesperson has stated Mr Kato’s comments were taken out of context and was meant to reference their work on the NGP (as our Sam Naylor predicted). This is Sony’s next-generation handheld device that claims to be able to run PS3 graphics in a PSP format, news which is still fantastically interesting, but doesn’t represent their official market-response to Nintendo’s (Project Cafe) Wii 2.

Right now it’s not too fanciful to believe that both Microsoft and Sony are looking at or already developing new architecture for their next console outings and I think the most interesting question to consider is whether Sony progresses with their free to access vision, or in the wake of their recent losses will they take the Microsoft path and monetize their online services.
