Square Enix Working on Unannounced Title, Could It Be Kane and Lynch 3?

Producer of Final Fantasy Tetsuya Nomura has said that Square Enix have a ‘secret team’ working on an unannounced game, potentially Kane and Lynch 3.

Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famistsu, he said:

There is also a secret team working on an unannounced title, so there is a chance that some information about that will be announced this year too, please continue looking forward to these announcements.

Ooh, you big tease. Unfortunately, it turns out this might just be Kane and Lynch 3, as the trademark Square Enix registered for a subtitle of “Sleeping Dogs” we reported on last week suggests a link to that series. I say “unfortunately” because I have played a Kane and Lynch game.

I don’t know what it is about Kane and Lynch, but even seeing the name makes me feel like strangling something. Some parts of the first game provided me with the most frustrating moments of my gaming life- because of extremely poor game design. It just felt lazy- like everything in the game was a first draft. Let’s hope this one can actually resemble a game this time, if it’s indeed real.

Rumor: Nintendo Condsidering Name Change for Wii U

Sources close to Nintendo are suggesting that the company is reconsidering the Wii U‘s name.

CVG reports that after public confusion about the difference between the DS and 3DS, Nintendo are in talks with a view to a Wii U name change. It’s no wonder, really- given that Nintendo had to resort to adverts that stated ‘It’s not a DS, it’s a 3DS.’

With the new console using the same grey-on-white colour scheme as the Wii, as well as the single leter difference between the names, it’s easy to see why this is happening. Hopefully this rumour is a true one, and we get a decent name that Nintendo will be able to sell.

Whoops: Microsoft Leaks Existence of Halo 4

Microsoft accidentally updated their website earlier today with references to Halo 4 and Dance Central 2, among other games. This news comes in just a few hours before the huge keynote later on today.

Yes, the penis that is Microsoft has only gone and spunked its biggest secret into the massive vagina of public knowledge, leaving it a little disappointed. Don’t worry Microsoft, it’s not nearly as bad as you think.

Other games mentioned in the leak (spotted by NowGamer) include Kinect Star Wars, Dance Central 2, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and Kinect Sports Season 2.

Sony Is ‘Not’ Working On The PS4

A few days ago we reported that Sony had commenced development of the next Playstation. We, and the rest of the gaming press were confident of this based on a statement from Sony’s Executive VP and Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato who said;

“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

Today a Sony spokesperson has stated Mr Kato’s comments were taken out of context and was meant to reference their work on the NGP (as our Sam Naylor predicted). This is Sony’s next-generation handheld device that claims to be able to run PS3 graphics in a PSP format, news which is still fantastically interesting, but doesn’t represent their official market-response to Nintendo’s (Project Cafe) Wii 2.

Right now it’s not too fanciful to believe that both Microsoft and Sony are looking at or already developing new architecture for their next console outings and I think the most interesting question to consider is whether Sony progresses with their free to access vision, or in the wake of their recent losses will they take the Microsoft path and monetize their online services.

Could Carmageddon be returning? The official website has begun a countdown timer, suggesting that in about 11 days time our question will be answered.

The domain appears to be registered to Square Enix so shut up anyone saying it’s a tease by someone buying an old domain up. Not that any of you were actually saying that, but you know what Carmageddon fans are like. Belligerent at best.

See you in 11 days then, I suppose. Talk about it in the comments, why don’t you? If you mention Dave’s name you will be granted 3 Internet wishes*.

Kojima Productions Hiring for “Next Generation” Metal Gear Solid?

Kojima Productions have posted a job listing for a “Next Generation Metal Gear Solid Series Production Staff,” implying even more future entries in the series.

The listing seeks “general planners, level designers and scripters,” along with programming jobs in “graphics, network, plug-ins, audio and game character.” Other jobs include “concept art, 3D character modeling, 3D stage modeling, 3D character motion design, event scene production, effect production and interface design.”

Interestingly the platforms mentioned aren’t just PS3 and Xbox 360, but PC as well. Perhaps we could be seeing Metal Gear coming to the high-powered world of home computing?

So, nothing solid, but some promising things coming from this job listing, especially for die-hard fans of Kojima’s epic series. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Next Elder Scrolls a “Direct Sequel” to Oblivion?

A Eurogamer Denmark report has suggested that he next Elder Scrolls game is not only definitely on the way, but will be a direct sequel to the previous title, Oblivion.

An unknown source has confirmed to them that the game has been underway for some time now. VG247 points out that Todd Howard, top dog at Bethesda, said earlier this year that a big project was already “pretty far along.”

Even though it’s just unconfirmed words flying about the Internet at the moment, it’s always good to hear news of the next Elder Scrolls game. As a huge fan of Oblivion it’s pretty exciting to hear that it’s a direct sequel- perhaps we’ll even be able to import our old characters into the new game.

German Newspaper Reveals 3DS Launch Details?

German newspaper The Bild, which happens to be the best-selling newspaper in Europe, has revealed a few details about the 3DS launch ahead of the official Nintendo announcement on September 29.

The newspaper reports that the 3Ds will launch in Japan on November 11th, 2010, with the device “probably” appearing in Europe in Q1 2011. The games listed as launch titles are as follows: Mario Kart 3D, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, and Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle.

The paper also detailed the launch price of the console: €200. It seems steep when you do a direct currency conversion ($270/£170) but bear in mind that these things rarely pan out like that, thanks to shipping, tax, and other irregularities. At this point it’s best to just wait until Nintendo confirm or deny anything on Wednesday before you make a judgment.

Have the Full 3DS Hardware Specifications Been Revealed?

An unknown source has revealed to IGN the full hardware specifications of the upcoming Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo has not yet released this information, although with a statement coming on September 29th, it won’t be long before we find out.

The 3DS will allegedly feature “two 266MHz ARM11 CPUs, along with a 133MHz GPU, 4MBs of dedicated VRAM, 64MBs of RAM, and 1.5GBs of flash storage.” The ARM11 CPU is used in the Zune HD as well as the older iPhone models.

DMP’s PICA200 is providing the graphics for the machine, although we had known that already. According to IGN, “Numerous developers working on software for the platform have likened its graphical capabilities to current-generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, albeit on smaller, lower-resolution screens.”

Sounds impressive, to say the least.

Far Cry 3 Listed by Swedish Retailers

Two Swedish game retailers, Webhallen and the localised version of ‘GAME’, have listed Far Cry 3 for release in “2010″.

The listing on GAME’s website simply notes: “Rumor says that this time the game will be played out in Africa but with an even larger world and with a completely updated Dunia engine.

“More information will follow closer to launch.”

Although both retailers list the game for 2010, we’ve not had any confirmation of this news. It seems odd for the game to come out this year when we’ve not heard a thing about it yet. File this one under “rumour” at the moment, until Ubisoft confirm or deny. Then again, they could pull a David Jaffe and deny it, then release it anyway.

UK Retailers List Potential New Batman Game for January 2011

This is in the thickest and most dubious part of the rumour jungle at the moment, but Batman fans may be interested to know that some UK retailers have listed a previously unheard of Batman game entitled “Gotham City Imposters” for release next January.

The game is listed to release on the 14th of January 201 for Xbox 360. The game’s title could be alluding to this Batman comic- but as far as we know at this point, the title could be alluding to Gotham, Nottinghamshire. Either way, there’s some imposters about in a City called Gotham.

Rumour: Shogun 2: Total War Press Release Leaked

After a few bits of Internet chatter and some hints from Total War developer The Creative Assembly (I recently got an email from Sega linking to a Shogun: Total War forum with no other explanation), it’s looking likely that we’ll see an announcement for Shogun 2: Total War at this year’s E3. As such, a leak of a press release explaining the ins and outs of the rumoured title seems plausible enough to consider.

The leak notes a 2011 release for PC, along with a lot of PR speak about how the game is revolutionary. Unfortunately I never got into the original Shogun: Total War, but this one might be enough to entice me back. I must say, though, that I’m still holding out for Rome 2: Total War. I’m a nut for ancient Mediterranean history games.

Rumour: Ubisoft to Reveal New Driver Game at E3

Joystiq has spotted that Ubisoft’s E3 press release makes note of “the next iteration of the blockbuster franchise Driver” as a playable game at their booth on the show floor.

Of course, it could just be a mistake, and the game will not be playable but rather just a trailer playing over and over again (this happens far too often). On the other hand it could be perfectly true, and the fact that it was on the official press release from Ubisoft is pretty strong evidence that we’ll at least see a reveal of the new Driver game at E3.

Driver was a stunning game, and one of my favourite driving games ever, but unfortunately as more and more Driver games came out the quality just got worse and worse. I sincerely hope that this one can do better. I suppose we’ll see in a few weeks.

Rumour: 2K to Develop Bioshock MMO

Some sources close to Destructoid (mysterious ones, even) have released ~~the Kraken~~ a rumour suggesting that 2K are developing a Massively Multiplayer Online game based on the Bioshock universe. Considering the best thing about Bioshock is the setting, one can see where the idea has merits.

However, MMOs just don’t work any more. Star Trek Online, for example, is now settling into slight obscurity along with the massive pile of other failed MMOs. World of Warcraft, Eve, Hello Kitty and Everquest just have too much of a monopoly on our money and time. My prediction: if this is real, it will not do well.

[Update: Fake] Rumour: Next Need for Speed Game to be Titled “Out of the Law” According to Concept Art

Two images have surfaced today which are believed to be concept images of the upcoming Criterion-developed Need for Speed game. They both suggest that the game’s subtitle will be “Out of the Law”, one of the worst subtitles since “And the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”.

Obviously this is an unconfirmed rumour at this point. Don’t take this as proof of anything. I should say that I always feel a tinge of guilt when I post rumours. It’s like posting something I overheard in a pub- clearly unreliable, but undoubtedly interesting. I post this not because I think it’s likely to be true (it could have been made by anyone with good photoshop skills and a stock image or something) but mostly because I love Criterion games, and I really hope they create a great Need for Speed game.

Update: Told you. Criterion have tweeted that the images are fake.

PS2 and Dreamcast games coming to PSN?

Destructoid have noticed this post on NeoGaf detailing a leaked document from SEGA. The document was leaked and includes a lot of goodies. The biggest piece of gossip is that “SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)”. Similarly, “If [SEGA] provide a list of DC (Dreamcast) titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.”

Yes, you may now say “wow, I hope this is real”. Journalist Jim Sterling notes that he “tried the download link and it certainly comes from Sega’s own PR site,” so this could be legit. I certainly hope so. Go to the links to see the full list, or hit the jump. Your choice.

Rumour: Pokémon Gold and Silver remakes coming?

Pokémon Sunday, part of the TV section of the Pokémon monolith, has hinted that Nintendo are about to announce remakes of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver. The show is going to announce something on next week’s episode, although at this point we don’t know what; but there is a theory that it will be for these two games. The show this week gave notice to two spherical decorations [see image], of the gold and silver variety.

Perhaps it’s nothing, but it’s interesting to speculate, especially when, like me, you’re of the opinion that Gold and Silver are the best in the series. Many think that remakes are pointless, but personally I welcome an update to these fantastic games.

Gran Turismo 5 rumours suggest 2009 release, track editor

Gamezine have dug up a forum post by an allegedly trustworthy member of the GTPlanet community, a large Gran Turismo forum and website. There are some cryptic whisperings on the forum post which you can see after the jump, as well as their interpretations, which include such things as a 2009 release, a track editor, and over 600 cars and 90+ tracks.

Forum post:

There are many winds blowing in the air right now, and every one of them is telling its own tale.

First wind whispers that final reunion will happen thirty nights before twelve months pass and that all winds from the whole world will reunite in the same moment for the first time.

Second wind says there will be more than half of dozen hundreds birds flying in the beginning of the reunion on almost eight dozen of skypaths, and some of the birds will come from the past reunion just resembling the looks of the newborn birds.

Third tale says that for the first time ever skypaths will not be just solid and already known but that new skypaths will be built by birdtamers from the parts of existing skypaths.

Fourth wind is talking that birdtamers will reunite in numbers greater than ever and will be granted with ability to talk to each other, make guilds and alliances with undisputed freedom.

Fifth wind says that reunion will happen in two forms, one greater than other and birdtamers will have freedom to decide which reunion they will attend. Greater reunion will ask for great sacrifice to be made in order to get all present and future treasures without new sacrifices needed, while smaller reunion will come in form already known, asking for more sacrifices if future treasures catches the eyes of the birdtamers.

Sixth wind is telling the tale about different reunion but almost the same as known one, smaller only for the eyes of those who do not want to see it in its whole glory. That different reunion will not happen in the realm same as the known one, but in the different realm which still has not been uncovered to the birdtamers. That realm will resemble realm already known but it will be divine new and made in the image of it.

All those birds, skypaths and birdtamers from all realms will unite for the Feast. And as it is already known, it will be the Feast of the Gods.

What it might mean:

# Worldwide release within the next 12 months, possibly December 1st 2009.
# 600+ cars, 96 tracks with remakes from GT4.
# Track editor splicing routes from existing tracks.
# Voice chat, party mode, clan support.
# Two releases, one SKU which gives you access to all future DLC, and another cheaper option that will let you purchase DLC separately.

Rumour: Mirror’s Edge PS3 Timed Exclusive

We don’t believe you David Reeves. It would be kind of us to say that much of what you spout is exagerated, but now you, Mr SCEE boss, have more “news” for us. DICE’s promising first person adventure game, Mirror’s Edge, will be a timed PS3 exclusive.

A Turn Up for Sony?

That would certainly be good news for Sony, especially considering our impressions of the game at E3 and the seductive footage revealed at Leipzig GC 08. Moreover, it’d be a better move than Sony’s Hazey chapter with Ubisoft. According to Heise.de, David Reeves has informed them that Mirror’s Edge will “initially be PS3 exclusive this year”, with the “PC and Xbox 360 versions to follow much later”, further stating:

We are continuously, month after month publishing new titles that bring something unique and target different groups. In a month it’s Gran Turismo, in the next SingStar, and Third-Party Title’s such as EA’s Mirror’s Edge are all part of the strategy.

Developer Confusion

DICE were bemused when asked, either by David Reeve’s incompetence, or by EA’s reluctance to inform them of the exclusivity deal; “We know nothing of that so far. But it is possible that there is collusion at the highest level, of which we are still uninformed.”

So DICE certainly don’t rule out the possibility and it’s not uncommon for a publisher to collude with console giants without developer input, as was the case with Ubisoft choosing the PS3 for Free Radical’s Haze. Remember, money rules the roost in software development.

PlayStation 3 Lead Platform

We can stir the rumour a tad more by remembering that DICE’s lead platform is the PS3 and any public showing of Mirror’s Edge has been on Sony’s platform.

If the rumour is false, David Reeve’s has further diminished our view of him. If the rumour is true, David Reeve’s can’t keep a secret, has a bigger mouth than Denis Dyack, and risks Microsoft cottoning on.

Rumour: Headstrong’s Secret Game At Leipzig GC – Possibly Jet Grind Radio

Sega has announced its Leipzig GC line-up, and they’re trying to make a song and dance out of Samba De Amigo. More interesting is the promise of the world premiere of a new title and the attendance of Headstrong Games on their booth.

Headstrong, rebranded from Kuju Entertainment at the end of July, is working on an as-yet-undisclosed Wii title for Sega, so it’s a fair bet they are not turning up to Leipzig just to soak up the atmosphere or see how it compares to E3.

So what could it be? Much as I would love it to be another Shenmue, it seems like it might be another Dreamcast classic – Jet Grind Radio. Sega filed this handy trademark, dated 24 July 2008, which gives us hope that they’re returning to the franchise.

They promise we’ll find out for sure before the event. Here’s the rest of their line-up, sadly devoid of any other Dreamcast greats begging for a resurrection:
