According to industry tracker VG Chartz, early sales data indicates that Grand Theft Auto IV has sold a whopping 2.5 million units in the Americas on its first day of release. Following Microsoft’s recent price cut of all the Xbox 360 hardware packages in Europe, sales in the UK have risen by 40%. In an attempt to push back against popular incoming Sony software like Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue PS3 bundle, the price cut looks to have had the intended effect so far.

The latest sales are in from Japan for the week starting 12/11 and ending 18/11, and surprisingly, the PS3 is holding on in there with its new 40GB model, fighting off Nintendo’s Wii for another week.
