PS3 Review – SOCOM: Confrontation

by Rangebar Merani on November 6, 2008 at 9:28 pm

As a huge fan of the SOCOM series, I eagerly anticipated the release of SOCOM: Confrontation since the PlayStation 3 was first unleashed. Once the game was actually launched last month, however, my anticipation turned into sorrow as the game was plagued with problematic issues such as locking players out of the servers, players “warping” around the map, and people shooting through walls. To keep things short, the game was really unplayable — not the launch Sony and Slant Six Games had in mind. Read more…

SOCOM: Confrontation Getting 1.30 Patch with Trophies and New Features

by Rangebar Merani on November 4, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Looks like things are finally starting to turn around for SOCOM fans. The recently released 1.20 patch fixes a majority of bugs and other problems, but what about Trophies?

Well, like a Navy Seal unit closing in on an enemy base, the trophies are on their way. The 1.30 patch is said to be arriving soon, complete with Trophy support as well as a full list of new features and bug fixes. Check the complete list of updates after the jump. Read more…

GC 08: SOCOM Confrontation Booth Employs the Use of Sandbags

by Chad Lakkis on August 21, 2008 at 1:20 pm

The Socom Confrontation booth at E3 consisted of — well, it didn’t exist. It was a single kiosk surrounded by several others running various Sony games.

At Liepzig however, those looking to play SOCOM won’t have the luxury of standing at a kiosk, in fact, they won’t be able to stand at all.

If you want to play the game, you will have to hit the ground, shimmy your way onto a sandbag, and duck under a low lying wooden structure covered in camouflage. Creative? Yes. Comfortable? Not so much.

Fun vs Reality: How Real Do You Want It?

by Chad Lakkis on August 3, 2008 at 8:37 pm

The trend in gaming as of late has been a push towards “reality”. Games like COD, Battlefield, and SOCOM all boast military advisors on staff, with a focus on making the game experience as “realistic” as possible.

The obsession with reality doesn’t end there, and its relation to a game’s overall fun factor, got me thinking — just how real do we want things, and at what point does reality cause a game to no longer be fun? Read more…

As a huge fan of the original SOCOM and SOCOM II, I was ecstatic to hear that new developer Slant Six (maker of PSP title SOCOM: Tactical Strike) are focusing on a close-quarters, tactical combat gameplay for the upcoming online shooter, SOCOM: Confrontation.

With a complete overhaul of the game and a huge leap forward in technology with the PS3, SOCOM: Confrontation is looking like the next-gen SOCOM experience we’ve all been waiting for. Read more…
