Among gamers, the praise and disdain for Sonic Unleashed were fairly uniform. The daytime running stages seemed to get it right, delivering to people the sort of gameplay they wanted from a 3D Sonic title. Meanwhile, the nighttime werehog stages seemed to be the worst possible exploit of a loophole one could imagine.

Wednesday, June 23rd will mark the 19th birthday of Sonic the Hedgehog, designated as such by the American and European release of the blue blur’s titular debut on the SEGA Genesis and Mega Drive (fun fact: Sonic 1 wasn’t released in Japan until three days later, a fact fans sometimes exploit in “he should be Robotnik, because that’s what he was called first” arguments).
