Lakitu is a jerk. Would anybody disagree with that? Floating up in his cloud, attacking those beneath him. People like him are ruining this country.

I am absolutely taken aback by Themrock’s artwork. It’s phenomenal. It reminds me of John Kricfalusi’s (the Ren & Stimpy guy) stuff. Everybody needs to check out his gallery.

10 Free NES Titles Are Now Available To 3DS Ambassadors

The 10 free NES titles that are being given to 3DS Ambassadors are available NOW! However it would appear that early adopters of the 3DS will currently have to wait for their 10 free Game Boy Advance titles. The 10 free NES games include the following:

Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Metroid
NES Open Tournament Golf
Donkey Kong Jr.
Balloon Fight
Ice Climber
Wrecking Crew
Yoshi

3DS Ambassadors can download these titles by entering the eShop, going to Settings / Other, then Your Downloads. Within the Your Downloads area will be every title that the user has previously downloaded plus the 10 free NES titles. In addition Ambassadors can download the Ambassador Certificate in the same section.

The Ambassador Certificate is nothing more than a lame movie telling the user they can receive notifications about Ambassador Program news by opting in to Ambassador Program notifications. While the movie may be lame I suggest all Ambassadors Download the video because without it they can’t get these Spot Pass notifications that will inform users of the latest happenings within the program.

All NES Ambassador Program Games Have Been Revealed

Many 3DS owners are getting pumped for the Ambassador Program which will grant those that purchased a 3DS for $249.99 that ability to get 20 free digital titles. 10 NES Virtual Console titles and 10 Game Boy Advance titles. Today Nintendo has revealed the full lineup of NES titles that will be available in Japan as part of the promotion, and I think it’s ALMOST safe to say the rest of the world will be getting these games as well. The full list can be seen below.

Super Mario Bros Meets Portal in Indie Title ‘Mari0′

What would happen if you stuffed Super Mario Bros and Portal into one indie game? Well, Mari0, obviously.

Mari0 is a free game in development now (release date: don’t ask) which blends the two games. “The primary maps will have a story and some portaly puzzles,” say Stabyourself, an indie developer made up of Maurice Guégan and Sašo Smolej.

The game will include all the SMB levels, including the Lost Levels, and you can even edit them on the fly. There’s even simultaneous multiplayer.

The gameplay looks like it really blends the two games well:

It’s not often I see a mash-up game like this and think it looks good, but the video above really shows how well the two games go. Too often these sorts of things are a silly little diversion for ten minutes but this one looks great. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Nintendo Announces 3DS Ambassador Program (Free Games Included)

Nintendo of America has just announced the 3DS Ambassador Program for the early adopters of the 3DS hardware. Those that have a 3DS, and connect to the eShop before 11:59 PM EST on August 11th, 2011, will be automatically enrolled. The 3DS Ambassador Program has two elements according to Nintendo.

The first part will allow 3DS owners that are in the program to download 10 free NES Virtual Console games starting September 1st, 2011. Games will include Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Ice Climber, Donkey Kong Jr., and Balloon Fight. These games will eventually be sold in the eShop, but those that are part of the Ambassador Program will have early access to these titles. Nintendo has also said that when these games do release to the general public later in 2011 that Ambassadors will be able to download the updated versions for free. I don’t know if that means the updated versions will have 3D or not, but I’m sure everyone can speculate.

The second piece of the program will grant 3DS owners in the Ambassador Program the ability to download 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games by the end of 2011. These games will include Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgames, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. These titles will NOT be available to purchase in the eShop and will therefore be exclusive to members of the Ambassador Program.

Nintendo has also said more details concerning the program will be announced in the future.

If The World Ended Tomorrow, What Video Game Would You Play?

As we all wait for the world to end tomorrow (according a handful of nutjobs) we’ve been doing some thinking around the RipTen offices.

If the world does indeed end tomorrow (which it won’t) what video game (that currently exists or not) would we want to be playing as we’re going off to that spirit in the sky?

Well, we asked around and these were what we came up with:

Chad Lakkis: Darksiders 2 (He sort of has a thing for Joe Mad)

Dave Oshry: Planescape: Torment (He’d like to go out while pondering the nature of man)

Bryce Wilson: DiRT 3 (This choice paid for by Codemasters AU)

Dani Cantrell: Chrono Trigger (She likes bosses named Lavos and boys with spikey red hair)

Four New Club Nintendo Rewards Now Available

Four new Club Nintendo rewards are now available in the North American Club Nintendo Rewards Catalog. The first three items are different Super Mario Bros. Premium Terrycloth Towels. These three towels are 9.8 X 9.8 inches and will cost Club Nintendo members 350 coins each. Each towel features characters, or items, from the Super Mario Bros. universe.

The final new item is a Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies screensaver. This screensaver features several characters from the Dragon Quest IX game and is only costs Club Nintendo members 10 coins.

What Mario Is Missing In North America For His 25th Anniversary

As many of you already know, Super Mario Bros. is celebrating its 25^th anniversary this year and Nintendo has been releasing tons of new hardware, software, and promotional goods to commemorate the occasion. In most regions, so far, Nintendo has released the beautiful Red Wii, and the Super Mario Bros. 25^th anniversary Nintendo DSi XL. They also has plans to release a special version of Super Mario All-Stars in most regions of the world.

Despite all of this there are some key items missing in North America and other regions. At this point I am currently worried that these awesome Mario related goods might not find their way outside of the release territories and into the states.

1. Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Nintendo DSi

The Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Nintendo DSi system is, without a doubt, a gorgeous piece of hardware. It’s red to match the other anniversary hardware and has an 8-bit jumping Mario above the outer camera.

This hardware has currently only seen a limited release in Japan. It was only made available at 7-Eleven stores and will probably remain hard to get. My question is, why hasn’t this been released outside of Japan? The limited edition Nintendo DSi XL was released, why not have this available too?

The solution? Just release it. I’d completely understand if Nintendo wanted this hardware unit to remain even harder to obtain than the Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary DSi XL they released in North America this week, so why not make it a store exclusive?

2. Donkey Kong (Original Edition)

This is a European exclusive believe it or not. The Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Red Nintendo Wii hardware comes packed with Donkey Kong Original Edition preloaded onto the Wii’s internal memory like a Virtual Console game. This special edition of the game appears to be the NES version of the game Donkey Kong with the Pie Factory level edited back in.

For those who don’t know, the Pie Factory level was originally deleted off the NES version of Donkey Kong due to memory restrictions. This is the version of the game that many people have been waiting for and it makes me sad to see it currently unavailable in North America, where the top Donkey Kong players in the world hail from.

The solution? Nintendo of America could easily make this available as a special Virtual Console download. Another option is that it could be released as a Club Nintendo Reward or just given out for free to those who buy the upcoming game Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo has options here, but I fear that this game may sadly remain a European exclusive.

3. Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Edition

Similar to how Europe got Donkey Kong Original Edition loaded on to the Red Wii’s sold in that region, Japan and Australia got their own game. Preloaded on to each and every Red Wii console in Japan and Australia is a Virtual Console style version of Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Edition.

This special edition of Super Mario Bros. looks and plays exactly like the NES game. The difference is that all the “?” Blocks have been replaced with the number 25. I think this is really cool and would love a chance to have a copy.

The solution? Since this is similar to the last one several of the same solutions apply. Nintendo could easily make this available for the Virtual Console in North America or just make it a Club Nintendo Reward. Also Nintendo could give it to players that purchase a copy of Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition.

The truth is that I’m a huge fan of Super Mario Bros. It is, in fact, my favorite video game of all time and I just want a chance to celebrate this occasion with all the same stuff as the rest of the world!! (I’m not completely upset at NoA because they did just hold an amazing event in New York for the Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary)

Why do these items have to be so exclusive and how come the North American Red Wii doesn’t come with any cool software preloaded on it? Also, why can’t Nintendo fans who already supported the company by purchasing a Wii get these digital goods in another way? Does this bother anyone else? Let your voice be heard!!

Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Party at Nintendo World Recap

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Nintendo World Store in New York City. I came to the event expecting a mid sized celebration, similar to the one hosted at the store to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Nintendo Power a few years back. Instead when I arrived,I was stuck in a huge line that formed to get into the store. I guess fans crave Mario more than Nintendo Power!

When I first entered the store I was in shock to see Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime standing there. It wasn’t mentioned anywhere that the popular Nintendo figurehead would be attending the event and I made sure to give him a hearty hello. He says he recognized me from past events. I guess this is a step in the right direction as I’ve wanted to work for the company since I’ve been five years old. I did what I could do about that and now it’s time to leave luck to heaven…for now.

There were several things to do once inside. On the ground floor Mario fans could wait in line in order to tell their fondest Mario memories in front of a camera. Some of these will, apparently, be featured on Nintendo.com in the future. Sadly the line was too long for me to chime in, but I still got a shot of inside the booth for those who were curious.

Another line let fans get their picture taken in front of the iconic start of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. Nintendo also let fans hold up various Mario related props. Props included a Paragoomba, Bullet Bill, Coin, Star, Fire Flower, Question Mark Block, and more. Above is the picture I got with my girlfriend who is too embarrassed to be seen with me. I chose to hold the Star and the Coin for power and money, two things I don’t have.

Fans who got their photo taken were also given this sweet Mario t-shirt. The back of this shirt has the Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary logo on it. (Too see that pic check out the gallery at the end of this update.)

Nintendo had a nice Super Mario Bros. cake on display. I was checking out the cake, and then all of the sudden Reggie came out for the cake cutting ceremony. It wasn’t long before he announced that Shigeru Miyamoto would be the one cutting the cake. Needless to say the overcrowded store went crazy and only 10 people could see anything. I still managed to grab some photos.

Nintendo handed out cake and cupcakes to fans. I didn’t get any choosing to take this momentary distraction to check out the rest of the store. A choice I don’t regret. Miyamoto also watched as a top Super Mario Bros. speed runner tried his best to set a record. (and failed) You can read more about that here.

This was also the first time many Nintendo fans got to check out some of the new displays at Nintendo World. The showcase/museum on the 2nd floor of the store is much larger now and is on top of where a hole in the floor used to allow people on the upper floor to look down below. The space is utilized in a much better way now and it’s a welcome change.

Before leaving I was also given a free Mario Moustache. This is cool but I did miss out on another piece of Mario 25th Anniversary swag. Nintendo ran out of Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Pullstring Backpacks. If anyone out there doesn’t want theirs, or if Nintendo wants to hook me up with one, please contact me.

Overall the event was a ton of fun but I felt like the store was overcrowded. It was nearly impossible for me to move around and I’m sure about a billion fire codes were broken. There are more pictures in the gallery and I apologize in advance for the poor quality of some of them. It was extremely hard to take pictures in such a crowded area.

Super Mario Bros. Speed Runner Fails In Front Of Miyamoto

Nintendo held a grand event at the Nintendo World Store in NYC yesterday to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros. The games creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, happened to be present at the event along with Andrew Gardikis. Gardikis has completed Super Mario Bros. in a record 5 minutes and was going to try to do it again in front of the game’s creator.

Unfortunately for Andrew he choked under the pressure and died several times on World 8-3. Those Hammer Bros. are no joke. I still give credit to Andrew for being able to play as well as he did under extreme pressure. You can’t expect a great run every time you play, but even in failure, Andrew proved his skill.

The Nintendo World Store Has Reopened

The Nintendo World Store, located in New York City, has just reopened their doors after closing down for renovations. The store now hosts various improvements such as a larger museum/showcase area, new interactive Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL stations, upgraded TVs, new graphics all around the store, and a new bamboo floor.

Nintendo has also stated that they will be hosting a Grand Reopening Party for the store, and the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., on November 7th. Further details about the Grand Reopening Party are coming soon. Three New Club Nintendo Rewards Now Available

Nintendo has been adding more new rewards to the North American Club Nintendo Rewards Catalog than ever before. They have now added three more exclusive items for Club Nintendo Members to spend their hard earned Coins on.

The first item is a Super Mario Bros. Tote Bag. This bag features a Super Mushroom from Super Mario Bros. The Tote Bag will cost Club Nintendo Members 250 Coins.

The second, more expensive bag, is a Messenger Bag that features a Star from Super Mario Bros. The Messenger Bag will cost 550 Coins.

The final new item is a digital reward. It’s a Super Mario Galaxy 2 Screen Saver and will only cost Club Nintendo Members a measly 10 Coins.

Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition Dated For North America

Nintendo of America has finally announced the release date for Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition in North America. The highly anticipated 25th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. special edition package for the Nintendo Wii, will be hitting the region on December 12 with an an MSRP of $29.99. This game includes the Super Nintendo versions (Super Mario All-Stars Versions) of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan).

This deal gets even better though because Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition is more than just the game! This package also comes with a 32-Page Super Mario History booklet that contains interviews, behind-the-scenes details, rare concept art, developer photos, and more! Also included in this package is a Super Mario History soundtrack CD. This CD will have music from Super Mario Bros. all the way up to Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Many people know that I’m a big Nintendo Fanboy and that I collect Nintendo games, goods, memorabilia, and more. If it says Nintendo on it, and it’s official, I want it. That’s what the Nintendo Collectors Journal is for. From this point on I’ll be documenting all the exciting Nintendo items I gather on my travels. I come across things both new and old so be sure to check back to see what I’ve come across.

Nintendo Collectors Journal 1/10/2011

This week I was able to obtain a decent amount of Nintendo goods. I was able to pick up the two wristband/belt buckle combos at my local Toys”R”Us. Each of the above puzzles that I purchased came from Five Below and cost $2.50 each.

Also available at Five Below were various forms of Nintendo Candy. I made sure to get some of the stuff I haven’t tried yet. I was surprised to see that the Wii Remote Kilk Candy/Dispenser is now available in black!

Last weekend I made sure to pick up a copy of Kirby’s Epic Yarn from my local Best Buy. I also got a copy of Data East Arcade Classics from Toys”R”Us last weekend as well.

A good friend of mine was moving this week and he was kind enough to let me have a bunch of his NES, SNES, and N64 systems, controllers, and games. Please enjoy the pictures of the haul below.

Super Mario Bros. DSi XL Gets North American Release Date

The Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Red Nintendo DSi XL bundle has just been given a release date in North America. The limited-edition bundle will be hitting retailers on November 7th and have an MSRP of $179.99 USD. The bundle includes a copy of Mario Kart DS and three pre-installed DSiWare titles. These titles include Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math, and Photo Clock.

Red Wii Gets North American Release Date

The limited-edition Red Nintendo Wii bundle has finally received a North American release date. The highly anticipated Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Wii bundle will be hitting retailers on November 7th. The bundle will include a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Red Wii Remote Plus, Red Nuchuck, and Wii Sports. This special edition bundle will be available while supplies last and have an MSRP of $199.99 USD.
