Geeked Out: Olly Moss Re-imagines Super Mario

Whether or not you know Olly Moss by name, you’re probably familiar with his work. He’s the guy behind the Victorian silhouette paper cuts of video game classics and the simplistic, yet gritty orange tinged design of Resistance 3‘s logo.

His latest work is fan art for the classic Super Mario, which re-imagines a darker version of the original story. Princess Peach’s face is hidden in shadow as Bowser, in ultra sinister fashion, hangs over her. The posters come in both black and white with red letter, or red with black and white lettering.

Personally, I think the red makes the scene (and my childhood) more ominous than I’m comfortable with.

E3 2011: New Super Mario Bros. Mii (Wii U) Will Likely Become A Full Release

New Super Mario Bros. Mii is another tech demo being shown off on the Wii U hardware. At E3, however, every player was forced to use a Wii Remote (held sideways) in order to play this game. While I was told the Wii U controller could be used, it was only displaying the same image as shown on the big TV screen.

As far as I could tell, New Super Mario Bros. Mii played exactly like New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The key difference here is that players could now choose to play as Mii characters that had Mario/Luigi style overalls. I didn’t play as any Mii characters but it looked as though each character played exactly like in the New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

While the title is fun, those at home weren’t really missing out on much by playing this game. It really was nearly identical to New Super Mario Bros. Wii except the levels were different as far as I could tell.

I think the coolest thing about this game was the fact that four players could take the action away from the TV screen and just use the screen on the Wii U controller to play if they really wanted to. While this might be a bad option for four players I’m sure it could work out great for two kids to utilize this option if a parental unit commandeers the TV for any reason.

Out of all the Wii U demos that I saw at E3 2011 I think that New Super Mario Bros. Mii has the highest chance of becoming a final product. I did, after all, successfully predict that a New Super Mario Bros. title would be coming to Wii U. Hopefully Nintendo makes a formal announcement about this title coming to the Wii U in the near future!

E3 2011: Super Mario 3DS to Hit Stores by the End of the Year (Video)

Super Mario 3DS has just been unveiled at the Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference.

North American Nintendo President Reggie-Fils Aime confirmed that it’ll be available in shops “before the year is over.”

Super Mario (3DS) Aiming For A 2011 Release

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has recently said a few interesting things about Super Mario (3DS). In a recent interview Miyamoto, Mario’s creator, said:

“I promise to do everything to deliver your new Mario this year,”

Additionally Miyamoto said that:

“It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64. It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

E3 can’t come soon enough!

Iwata Reveals 3D Mario Game For 3DS

During his keynote at GDC, Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata has revealed a new 3D Mario Platform game that is coming to the 3DS. This title has been hinted about for months and Iwata assured the world that it would be playable at E3 in June. The logo also has a mysterious tail that Iwata also promised to reveal at E3.

This new Mario game is also being developed by the same team that created Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2!

From the looks of it it would appear that the tail in the logo is that of Raccoon Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3, but only time will tell! Enjoy the screens of the new game below.

Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition Final Shipment Coming

Nintendo of America has announced that Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition is going to have one final print. This will likely be the last chance for any Mario fans out there to grab the game for the MSRP of $29.99 instead of having to pay higher costs on eBay. The final shipment of this collection is due in stores March 13, 2011.

Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition includes the Wii version of Super Mario All-Stars, the Super Mario History soundtrack CD, and a 32-page Super Mario History booklet. The game includes the SNES versions of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels.

The items featured this week are Mario Valentine’s Day cards. The older cards are leftovers from when I used to give these out as a young Nintendo Fanboy and are dated 1989. The items featured in this video are old Mario Ice Cream Bars with the ice cream still intact. Yes it’s disgusting, but I thought it would be a bit humorous at the same time. Only the King Nintendo Fanboy would have these…right? I have no idea if these items have any value at all, but if you know anyone else that has these let me know!

The Mario Ice Cream Bars in the blue packaging are older. I think sometime around 2001 they switched over to the yellow packaging with the Mario Kart 64 artwork on it.

Anyone know if they still make these? Regardless they tasted exactly the same as another Good Humor ice cream bar, Bubble Play - the baseball glove with the bubblegum baseball in the center. Just look for it the next time the Ice Cream man is around if you want to know what it tasted like.

Super Mario 3 Music Recreated in Minecraft

Yesterday we showed you video of the infamous Chicken Cannon, but today we present something a little more musically inclined. New Super Mario Bros. Wii Official Belgium Stamps

This is a Mario Crystal from the Nintendo World Store in New York City. This piece cost $399.99 USD. Nintendo began selling one new crystal for each year of the stores operation starting in 2005 through 2007. I hope you enjoy the video and pictures of this hard to come by Nintendo collectable.

What Mario Is Missing In North America For His 25th Anniversary

As many of you already know, Super Mario Bros. is celebrating its 25^th anniversary this year and Nintendo has been releasing tons of new hardware, software, and promotional goods to commemorate the occasion. In most regions, so far, Nintendo has released the beautiful Red Wii, and the Super Mario Bros. 25^th anniversary Nintendo DSi XL. They also has plans to release a special version of Super Mario All-Stars in most regions of the world.

Despite all of this there are some key items missing in North America and other regions. At this point I am currently worried that these awesome Mario related goods might not find their way outside of the release territories and into the states.

1. Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Nintendo DSi

The Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Nintendo DSi system is, without a doubt, a gorgeous piece of hardware. It’s red to match the other anniversary hardware and has an 8-bit jumping Mario above the outer camera.

This hardware has currently only seen a limited release in Japan. It was only made available at 7-Eleven stores and will probably remain hard to get. My question is, why hasn’t this been released outside of Japan? The limited edition Nintendo DSi XL was released, why not have this available too?

The solution? Just release it. I’d completely understand if Nintendo wanted this hardware unit to remain even harder to obtain than the Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary DSi XL they released in North America this week, so why not make it a store exclusive?

2. Donkey Kong (Original Edition)

This is a European exclusive believe it or not. The Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Red Nintendo Wii hardware comes packed with Donkey Kong Original Edition preloaded onto the Wii’s internal memory like a Virtual Console game. This special edition of the game appears to be the NES version of the game Donkey Kong with the Pie Factory level edited back in.

For those who don’t know, the Pie Factory level was originally deleted off the NES version of Donkey Kong due to memory restrictions. This is the version of the game that many people have been waiting for and it makes me sad to see it currently unavailable in North America, where the top Donkey Kong players in the world hail from.

The solution? Nintendo of America could easily make this available as a special Virtual Console download. Another option is that it could be released as a Club Nintendo Reward or just given out for free to those who buy the upcoming game Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo has options here, but I fear that this game may sadly remain a European exclusive.

3. Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Edition

Similar to how Europe got Donkey Kong Original Edition loaded on to the Red Wii’s sold in that region, Japan and Australia got their own game. Preloaded on to each and every Red Wii console in Japan and Australia is a Virtual Console style version of Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary Edition.

This special edition of Super Mario Bros. looks and plays exactly like the NES game. The difference is that all the “?” Blocks have been replaced with the number 25. I think this is really cool and would love a chance to have a copy.

The solution? Since this is similar to the last one several of the same solutions apply. Nintendo could easily make this available for the Virtual Console in North America or just make it a Club Nintendo Reward. Also Nintendo could give it to players that purchase a copy of Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition.

The truth is that I’m a huge fan of Super Mario Bros. It is, in fact, my favorite video game of all time and I just want a chance to celebrate this occasion with all the same stuff as the rest of the world!! (I’m not completely upset at NoA because they did just hold an amazing event in New York for the Super Mario Bros. 25^th Anniversary)

Why do these items have to be so exclusive and how come the North American Red Wii doesn’t come with any cool software preloaded on it? Also, why can’t Nintendo fans who already supported the company by purchasing a Wii get these digital goods in another way? Does this bother anyone else? Let your voice be heard!!

Mario Sports Mix To Include Final Fantasy Characters

The official Mario Sports Mix Japanese website revealed today that the game, which is being developed by Square Enix, will feature several Final Fantasy characters in addition to the traditional Mario roster. On the Mario side we see that playable characters include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, and Toad. The Final Fantasy side of the roster will feature a Ninja, Shirma, Croma, a Moogle, and a Cactuar. In addition it seems that players will be able to select their Mii characters.

This announcement should come as no surprise to those who have been following Mario and the Mario developed Square Enix games. Final Fantasy characters also found themselves in Mario’s last Square Enix developed tile, Mario Hoops 3-On-3 for the Nintendo DS.

Mario Sports Mix, for the Nintendo Wii, is currently scheduled for a 2011 release in regions outside of Japan.

Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Party at Nintendo World Recap

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Nintendo World Store in New York City. I came to the event expecting a mid sized celebration, similar to the one hosted at the store to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Nintendo Power a few years back. Instead when I arrived,I was stuck in a huge line that formed to get into the store. I guess fans crave Mario more than Nintendo Power!

When I first entered the store I was in shock to see Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime standing there. It wasn’t mentioned anywhere that the popular Nintendo figurehead would be attending the event and I made sure to give him a hearty hello. He says he recognized me from past events. I guess this is a step in the right direction as I’ve wanted to work for the company since I’ve been five years old. I did what I could do about that and now it’s time to leave luck to heaven…for now.

There were several things to do once inside. On the ground floor Mario fans could wait in line in order to tell their fondest Mario memories in front of a camera. Some of these will, apparently, be featured on Nintendo.com in the future. Sadly the line was too long for me to chime in, but I still got a shot of inside the booth for those who were curious.

Another line let fans get their picture taken in front of the iconic start of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. Nintendo also let fans hold up various Mario related props. Props included a Paragoomba, Bullet Bill, Coin, Star, Fire Flower, Question Mark Block, and more. Above is the picture I got with my girlfriend who is too embarrassed to be seen with me. I chose to hold the Star and the Coin for power and money, two things I don’t have.

Fans who got their photo taken were also given this sweet Mario t-shirt. The back of this shirt has the Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary logo on it. (Too see that pic check out the gallery at the end of this update.)

Nintendo had a nice Super Mario Bros. cake on display. I was checking out the cake, and then all of the sudden Reggie came out for the cake cutting ceremony. It wasn’t long before he announced that Shigeru Miyamoto would be the one cutting the cake. Needless to say the overcrowded store went crazy and only 10 people could see anything. I still managed to grab some photos.

Nintendo handed out cake and cupcakes to fans. I didn’t get any choosing to take this momentary distraction to check out the rest of the store. A choice I don’t regret. Miyamoto also watched as a top Super Mario Bros. speed runner tried his best to set a record. (and failed) You can read more about that here.

This was also the first time many Nintendo fans got to check out some of the new displays at Nintendo World. The showcase/museum on the 2nd floor of the store is much larger now and is on top of where a hole in the floor used to allow people on the upper floor to look down below. The space is utilized in a much better way now and it’s a welcome change.

Before leaving I was also given a free Mario Moustache. This is cool but I did miss out on another piece of Mario 25th Anniversary swag. Nintendo ran out of Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Pullstring Backpacks. If anyone out there doesn’t want theirs, or if Nintendo wants to hook me up with one, please contact me.

Overall the event was a ton of fun but I felt like the store was overcrowded. It was nearly impossible for me to move around and I’m sure about a billion fire codes were broken. There are more pictures in the gallery and I apologize in advance for the poor quality of some of them. It was extremely hard to take pictures in such a crowded area.

Five New Club Nintendo Rewards Now Available

The official North American Club Nintendo Rewards Catalog has just been updated with five new Super Mario Bros. rewards. Four of the five new rewards are Super Mario Bros. Commemorative Pins. Each of these exclusive pins will cost Club Nintendo members 450 Club Nintendo Coins.

The fifth new item is a Evolution Of Mario Screen Saver for PC or Mac. This screen saver features footage from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. This screen saver is relatively inexpensive at a mere 10 Club Nintendo Coins.

Many people know that I’m a big Nintendo Fanboy and that I collect Nintendo games, goods, memorabilia, and more. If it says Nintendo on it, and it’s official, I want it. That’s what the Nintendo Collectors Journal is for. From this point on I’ll be documenting all the exciting Nintendo items I gather on my travels. I come across things both new and old so be sure to check back to see what I’ve come across.

This week I didn’t find that many things, but they are still cool. First is the Limited Edition Yoshi three pack that contains a blue, yellow, and pink Yoshi. These three figures are NOT part of the Series 1 or 2 figures from the same manufacturer and don’t fall into any series from what I can tell. I got this at Toys”R”Us for $12.99. I also got a Donkey Kong Monster Truck toy at Toys”R”Us for $3.99.

It took a while to track down, but I found a Wal-Mart that was selling the Wii Party bundle that comes with a Wii Remote for $69.99. This bundle is only available at select Wal-Mart locations. I also got a copy of Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs for a whopping $5.00 after savings!
