As of today, the PlayStation 3 is officially a third dimensional console. In an announcement over on the Official PlayStation 3 blog, Sony let it be known that from this point forward, games that don’t reach out and smack you in the face are a thing of the past. Well, sort of.

There are four games ready to be played in full stereoscopic 3D; Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, parts of Pain, and the Motor Storm Pacific Rift demo — all of which can be downloaded from the PSN. Sony are also promising The Fight: Lights Out, a gritty brawler that utilities the Move technology, will be in 3D too.

Of course, you’ll need a 3D television to experience all of those dimensions, and they don’t come cheap. Sony’s own Bravia model, which won’t ship to retailers until later this month, will set you back at least $2099.99. Hardly what you’d call pocket change, but Sony are promising to bundle their 3D ready models with PSN vouchers that can be used to download the 3D content. Hey, it’s better than nothing. No word yet on how bad people will look whilst wearing the stereoscopic glasses.

So this Multiplayer/Community Expansion is on the store but says “Coming Soon”. Thus, it isn’t in the weekly PSN update list and is not yet usable. There is, however, a list of the expansion’s features:

There will be new game modes, split-screen cooperative, split-screen versus, an editor for the battling ships, remastered music and sound effects, enhanced visual effects, a music attack mode and clan support.

So there we go, exciting stuff. There has always been online leader-boards for Super Stardust HD, but clan support sounds – interesting. A Super Stardust Clan? Hard to get your head around that one, but it sounds cunning.

Oh and just a little warning – this add-on is purchasable now, but it’s an empty purchase, so do not buy it or you shall be out of pocket. Quite a few people have fallen for this “trap”, since the “Coming Soon” is only in the picture, which doesn’t load immediately. Some strange mistake by Sony there. It also doesn’t seem to be viewable by everybody.

Note the Need For Speed add-on file sizes – only 100KB. They are already in the game, but EA is giving you the opportunity to buy them instead of earning them through completing the Career mode for those of you who are lazy. Strange.  You’re just buying very expensive cheat codes.  Nice one E.A.
