Valve Promises Three “Big Surprises” in the Next Year

Valve has promised “at least three big surprises” in the next year. However, no further details were given.

“I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn’t going to stop any time soon. I’m just laughing because… people will be shocked again,” Gabe Newell told PC Gamer.

“We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least.”

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 is obviously on the minds of Valve fans but this could mean anything. Maybe we’ll see more out-of-the-blue content like Alien Swarm, or a brand new IP, or even the announcement of Half-Life 3 outright.

Rumor: Metal Gear Super Surprise in December

Word on the street is that a super secret special surprise awaits players that have completed Metal Gear Solid 4. Rumor has it that something will unlock in the game come this December. If you’ve beaten the game, you’ll know the relevance of the six-month time frame (no spoilers here, sorry). Kojima has supposedly said that people who pirate the game will miss out on “something special” which further fuels the idea since pirated copies don’t necessarily sync well with PSN. So, what’s the surprise?

Speculation is that an update will occur via PSN that will unlock the mystery of what happens to Snake after the ending of MGS4. Because it’ll occur via PSN, you won’t be able to “cheat” and find out ahead of time what the secret is by changing your PS3′s internal clock. Now the question remains of whether this content will merely be an additional cutscene or if it will actually be playable.

Again, this is just a rumor, but one that is picking up some steam within the Metal Gear community. It could all just be bullshit to make you never want to get rid of your copy of the game, or there really might be some truth to it. After all, you know what they say about Internet rumors…

Spore Tribal Stage Introduced

EA must get a kick out of teasing the public like this, releasing information about Spore ever so slowly, like a stripper carefully removing her clothing one by one. This time, they’ve unveiled the Tribal Stage, the third in the Spore evolutionary chain. Naturally, they’ve also released some screenshots to keep folks salivating.

The Tribal Stage starts you off in a (surprise!) tribe, with a number of powers available to you depending on how you did in the Cell and Creature Stages. You’ve just discovered tools and use them for a number of tasks such as hunting, fishing, or domesticating wild animals. I wonder if discovering tools involves your tribe being inspired by a mysterious black obelisk.

Anyway, you can also buy more tools, use these to buy tribal accessories, and of course use them to make new friends or enemies with other tribes. Whichever route you take with your neighboring tribes (peaceful or aggressive), take over five to dominate the continent and form a civilization.

Wireless Guitars Now in Special Edition Rock Band Bundles

Upon a recent journey to my local Wal-Mart, I found myself in the electronics section like I mysteriously always do. What I found, however, was a slight surprise – a Rock Band Special Edition bundle with an included wireless guitar.

While I’ve read several times that the Rock Band wireless guitar would become available separately come April, I don’t remember hearing anything about the guitars being included in the bundle. Perhaps it just wasn’t advertised or maybe I just don’t pay attention since I already own the game, but it came as a surprise to me.

The bundle I saw was for the Xbox 360. I looked in the PS3 section also, but they didn’t have one. That’s not to say they don’t exist, but I can’t confirm it because there weren’t any there. If you didn’t know about this new bundle, then guess what? You heard it here first!

The Sims 3 Teaser Site Up

Sequelization, it’s ubiquitous. Today EA launched a teaser site for a hardly surprising sequel to one of the best selling PC games ever. The Sims.

My real question is, if Sims and Spore mastermind Will Wright will remain at the helm for the series’ third appearance, or if Sims the torch will be passed on to another (hopefully just as amazing) game designer.

Clearly, details are scarce. But if Wright indeed continues to design, we can expect good things – if not, be cautiously optimistic if you love these tiny computer people.

Don’t expect much in the way of information in the near future, and the release may be even further off. Unless this is one of those announce-late, surprise-release deals.

Doubt it!
