Major Nelson Says We Can Expect Some Surprises from Rare

E3 has come and gone, and despite all the hype and Kool-aid surrounding Kinect (don’t look at us, the ponchos weren’t our idea), there was nary a thing on display from Rare. Well, besides Kinect Sports, that is… but that couldn’t be the only thing the entire studio has been working on, could it?

That very issue was brought before Xbox LIVE Director of Programming Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb during an interview with Xboxygen:

“We can’t believe this is the only game they are working on currently now. Can we expect surprises from Rare in the coming months?”

And the answer?

Of course :)

Simple, but to the point.

Since Banjo has made a glorious return (two Xbox LIVE Arcade ports with Stop ‘n Swop compatibility, an all-new game, and an exclusive role in the Xbox 360 version of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sounds at least a little glorious, you have to admit), Perfect Dark has received an XBLA upgrade to high definition, and GoldenEye is out of their hands, one is left to wonder what surprises might remain up Rare’s sleeve. Something involving Killer Instinct, perhaps?

Of course, Rare has no shortage of classic franchises to dip into, assuming they don’t decide to explore new territory. But how about an HD Wizards & Warriors title already? Or maybe an Xbox LIVE Arcade version of the Battletoads arcade game, complete with online co-op?

These are the issues that matter!

6th May Big Playstation Day: Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Mirror’s Edge and More

Playstation Day. Tomorrow. London. Be there or be round. Sadly we weren’t invited, but much of the top tier European press will be getting a lucky look at Playstation’s exclusive 2008 titles. Resistance 2 is confirmed, and the slight promise of a new Killzone 2 demo should make tomorrow a day to remember.

The potential was always there for a storm, with Sony’s new worldwide president Kaz Hirai flying into the capital to give a keynote speech. Appearances of Playstation Home, Play TV and even LittleBigPlanet are expected, but further surprises might be waiting.

Insomniac have confirmed the first playable demo of Resistance 2, but only excited press previews and screenshots will exit closed doors. The first gameplay footage will have to wait until June 13th. However, everything appears to be set for Resistance 2 to impress tomorrow, as expressed by Insomniac’s James Stevenson on Neogaf:

We are off to dinner, but rehearsals went well, Resistance 2 is up and running on its three kiosks and we had a nice game going with the boys in Burbank.

It’s Insomniac’s podcast host who also lifts the curtains on a possible Killzone 2 showing. In response to a pessimistic neogaffer who said Killzone 2 won’t make an appearance tomorrow, James Stevenson simply says:

Wrong.

Consider us intrigued. So what do we get out of all this? Well, tomorrow will see an early European Playstation Store update, with a HAZE demo at top billing. That’s not all. Two more demo’s, The Bourne Conspiracy and Race Driver: GRid, will take their place on the store this Thursday, along with footage from tomorrow’s event. Interest rising…

New Characters Confirmed for Street Fighter IV

In an interview with several 1UP editors, producer Yoshinori Ono confirmed that Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li (and her thighs), are all going to be in Street Fighter IV along with a batch of new (mostly female) faces.

Ono also stated that Street Fighter II is the benchmark that will be strived for in the next-generation sequel’s gameplay, balance, speed and characters.

He used the word “preserve” throughout the interview, but we hope that there are plenty of surprises when Street Fighter IV is finally released and not before it’s ready.
