New Tomb Raider Info Released – Plot, Gameplay, and Setting Details

Since the initial reveal and E3 footage, news on the Tomb Raider reboot has been pretty scarce. We know that series heroine Lara Croft ends up stranded on an island after her expedition ship gets destroyed by a storm. Luckily, Karl Stewart, Global Brand Director at Eidos was happy to reveal some new information on the forums:

Combat will have a variety of different play types. Melee, ranged, and stealth interactions will play a huge part in the game world
There will be hunting in the game, but what you’ll be hunting is a mystery
There are items and artifacts to pick up and find around the island that’ll help uncover the mystery of island
There are fixed climbing points for the axe, giving you freedom of movement. At the same time, you couldn’t jump off the side of a cliff and hook onto another side at random for free climbing
No glowing points to show where you can climb, but you’ll still be able to figure it out. They want the game to feel “organic and natural”

Tomb Raider is scheduled for a late 2012 release for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

The Making of Tomb Raider’s Epic “Turning Point” Trailer (Video)

Little more than a month ago, we bore witness to the epic “turning point” trailer that truly introduced the word to Crystal Dynamics new Lara Croft. It was one hell of a trailer that showcased not only the gritty new approach to the franchise, but also the always first rate CG direction at Square Enix.

In the following video, the team behind the epic trailer detail just how it was made and how it all came together:

Epic indeed. Square has been pushing the envelope in CG trailers for years, and it doesn’t appear that they intend to slow down anytime soon.

Executive at Square Enix Admits to a “Humiliating” Japanese E3 Lineup

Koji Taguchi tweeted this past Friday about his concerns with Square Enix‘s noticeable lack of Japanese games on display at E3. While games like Tomb Raider, Deus-Ex: Human Revolution, and Hitman garnered considerable media attention and fan hype, Final Fantasy XIII-2 failed to leave a lasting impression. The heavy hitters are coming from Eidos, the Montreal-based studio which Square Enix acquired in 2009. It comes as no surprise to learn that Square’s had some trouble recently with lackluster games coming out of its studios. With the mixed response to Final Fantasy XIII and the disastrous launch of Final Fantasy XIV, Square needed to showcase strong titles this year if it hoped to reclaim the trust of its audience.

“Because we merged with Eidos and had games like Tomb Raider, Deus [Ex], and Hitman, as a company we were able to keep face. But the decline in Japanese titles was almost humiliating. This has been a week where I worried daily about how we can fix this.”

Despite the disappointing lack of strong Japanese titles showcased at E3, Square did manage to save face with an impressive line up from Eidos. With Tomb Raider and Deus Ex nominated for multiple awards already, Square still has a few aces up its sleeve… despite its stock troubles and the continuing struggle to release Final Fantasy XIV on PS3. As long as Eidos can deliver games that live up to the caliber of their trailers and E3 demos, then Square will rise again.

New Tomb Raider Trailer Highlights Grittier, More Realistic Lara Croft

Remember that Tomb Raider reboot that was slated to come out? With all the hype and announcements surrounding E3, I had certainly forgot that the new title was even being developed much less being touted by Square Enix at E3.

The new trailer entitled “Turning Point” is meant to show how Lara Croft became the Tomb Raider that we all know and love. Survivors aren’t born they’re made.

Armed with only the raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, TOMB RAIDER delivers an intense and gritty story into the origins of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor.

Enjoy the trailer and we’ll know more when Ripten hits E3 2011 next week.

I don’t know a whole heck of a lot about Tomb Raider, but I do know that it’s very hard to find good Tomb Raider fan art that doesn’t emphasize Lara’s boobs. Not that that’s entirely a bad thing.

New Tomb Raider Screens Get Down and Dirty

As you should know by now, the Tomb Raider franchise is getting a reboot. Not only that, but it features a younger Lara Croft before she became the wealthy globe trotting heroine we all know.

Well, today we’ve got some brand new screens that show just how hard it will be for lady Croft to get her adventures started.

Game Informer has got the exclusive preview next month – but they were nice enough to release some screens for the rest of us eager gamers – enjoy:

Yeah, I know – they look amazing. I wasn’t too excited before, but Lara and this game are lookin’ good!!

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Lara Croft will be getting a face lift. Not that she needed one . . . but she’s getting one anyway. In fact, shes getting three!!

A Tomb Raider HD Trilogy collection for PS3 will indeed be coming in March 2011

Karl Stewart of Crystal Dynamics tweeted the confirmation earlier today after a retail listing popped up on Amazon.de (Silly Germans)

The pack will contain high-def versions of Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Tomb Raider: Underworld all on one Blu-ray disc.

New Tomb Raider Game Box Art Revealed?

EB Games, Australia’s largest video game retailer recently uploaded their listing for the new Tomb Raider reboot, complete with box art and a short blurb about the game. EB Games has speculated the RRP at $108 AUD, although that is not the confirmed price and it’s bound to change at some point. The informative blurb about Lara Croft’s new adventure reads;

After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.

Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

And as this post title mentions, there is also a box art image on the listing. Check it out below;

Update: I sent off a message to EB Games online representative to try and get some light shined on the new cover art. Check it out below, and whilst it doesn’t 100% confirm the cover art, it definitely seems legitimate.

New Tomb Raider Revealed – Will Be A Reboot

It looks as if Crystal Dynamics will be rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise and diving into the origins of Lara Croft.

January’s cover of Game Informer has been revealed and with it, the unveiling of a new Tomb Raider.

They had this to say:

In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.

Judging from the image, we can be certain of a few things, Lara will be hot and she will carry a bow.

RipTen Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (XBLA)

Square-Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ most recent entry into the Tomb Raider franchise is a significant departure for the series; even the name has changed from Tomb Raider to Lara Croft. Fans of the series will notice the change the instant the title boots up, with a menu screen styled after a graphic novel. The game retains that graphic novel feel throughout.

This game is beautiful. The environments are alive with motion, every level has a rich backdrop. You’ll travel from underground tombs, to ancient swamps, to lava-filled caverns, and each one has a unique style. Fire, water, and magic effects are impressive, and fill the screen with no slowdown or choppy framerate. Killing enemies provides you with a gratifying explosion of light, and by the end of the game 10+ enemies on-screen at a time isn’t unusual. Check out the gameplay video below to see what I’m talking about (SPOILER ALERT):

The story, on the other hand, is easily forgettable. Really, it’s just an excuse to have Lara crawling through a temple fighting a bunch of supernatural baddies. You’re chasing some ancient, evil Aztec God, but other than yelling about how you’re going to die in the occasional cutscene, he really does very little. Really, though, it doesn’t seem to matter. Playing as Lara Croft will be enough for most gamers in this case, and that’s ok.

The isometric style view lends a completely different feel to the game than previous Tomb Raiders, but it works and works well. The puzzles are designed to fit into the view, there’s never any annoying point where you can’t see what you need to see. The camera also aids in the more casual feel of the game, as it’s much easier to see around you and gaps are easier to judge. The viewpoint actually reminded me a lot of dungeon crawlers like Gauntlet or Diablo 2, a feeling that is backed up by the overall style of the game. Lara can level up, which is accomplished through collectibles. Through various side rooms, you’ll get access to artifacts that boost attributes. You can only have 2 of them equipped at a time, so choosing which artifacts to use can be very strategic.

Puzzles in Co-op are inventive as well

The weapons in Guardian of Light are fun to use. They vary from Lara’s trusty dual pistols to a a chain gun. Let me say that again: a CHAIN GUN. And yes, mowing enemies down with a chain gun is incredibly fun. Ammo is handled well in the game; there are primary weapons (Lara’s pistols and this divine spear thing) and secondary weapons. Primary weapons have unlimited ammo, while secondaries have a blue bar next to Lara’s health. All secondary weapons pull from the same ammo, so ammo management really is a non-issue. Lara also has bombs, which are unlimited and very useful in combat. One move I found particularly useful was to use the roll ability through a crowd of enemies and drop a bomb in the middle of them, then detonate the bomb. This is a great crowd buster, but never felt overpowered.

Because of the different viewpoint, controlling Lara is completely new. The left stick is used to control movement, while the right stick aims. It takes a little getting used to, but after about five minutes you’ll be running around and dodging monsters with ease. There’s a bit of an aim-assist as well, so not having a precise targeting system is fine. Lara moves from one action to the next fluidly and with the grace expected of the acrobatic heroine. I never had any point in the game where the controls seemed to get in the way at all, and that’s how a game is supposed to be.

This Lara Croft is focused a bit more on action than puzzles. There are still plenty of puzzles, but they are fairly quick and easy to solve. Puzzle design is well-done and varied, though, so each one feels fresh and new. The game changes pace often, and every few minutes you’ll find yourself surrounded by enemies in an epic battle. Each enemy has a different power, and a different way to fight them. Each battle was exciting and new.

In the end, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a great game, and definitely worth a playthrough. It’s easily got 10+ hours of gameplay, and you’ll find that it’s addictive. In addition, on September 28th Crystal Dynamics is releasing a patch for online co-op, which will extend the play value even more. While reminiscent of previous Tomb Raider titles, Guardian of Light is a lighter, leaner game. I actually had the feeling that the game would not be completely out of place in an arcade. I’d recommend this game to any fan of the series, as well as newcomers to Lara Croft.

Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light Launching Without Online Co-Op

I think the two Summer of Arcade games that I’m most excited about are Monday Night Combat and Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light. Getting a TF2-style shooter on XBLA seems like a terrific idea, but getting an isometric, online co-op enabled Lara Croft game seems too good to be true. Oh, did I say online co-op enabled? I meant “local and local only for a month enabled”. Just a typo- the keys are right next to each other and whatnot.

If you’re looking forward to blasting through Guardian of Light with a buddy online, then you’re going to have to wait until September 28th, coincidentally the same day the PS3 version launches. Crystal Dynamics plans to patch online co-operative play into the game that day, as it seems as though it won’t be ready for launch.

I’m conflicted on this news; on the one hand, not having to deal with a delay on the game is great, but I have a feeling that online co-op is what will make this game the most fun. I guess we’ll have to find out ourselves whether or not we’re willing to wait for a patch when the game launches on Xbox Live Arcade on August 18th. [Destructoid]

Rumor: New Tomb Raider Title Slated for Christmas 2011?

According to Eurogamer, a new Tomb Raider title might be in everyones present pile come Christmas 2011. Based out of California, Tomb Raider’s developers Crystal Dynamics are reportedly working away like busy beavers on a new game to feature a “young and inexperienced Lara Croft” in an environment off of the coast of Japan exploring, you guessed it, old tombs. To further fuel the fire of chitter chatter, ex-Crystal Dynamics artist Joel Boucquemont uploaded a bunch of “Tomb Raider Concept Art to his online portfolio, some of which features everyones favorite female heroine in the neon lit streets of Japan.

Square Enix, publishers of the long running series declined to comment, so as of now we’re chalking this on the board as a mere rumor. What do you think though? Would you like to see Lara return with a new and fresh approach?

Prince of Persia Surpasses Tomb Raider As Highest Grossing Video Game Movie Ever

It appears that a video game movie has finally been able to surpass the epic boobage of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. That thing is Jake Gyllenhaal as The Prince of Persia . . . seriously.

$274 million. That was the high water mark set by Tomb Raider. It was a tough mark to beat for a video game adaptation, especially given how much they seem to fail at the box office. Alas, Disney’s latest summer blockbuster starring everyone’s favorite two timing cowboy, has done it with a total gross of $300 million so far.

However, The Sands of Time is almost considered a flop when you compare it to Toy Story 3 which has already made $326 million worldwide and is still a very new movie at the box office.

Neither movie was highly regarded by critics.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider rated 20% amongst top critics on Rotten Tomatoes and the consensus was that

Angelina Jolie is perfect for the role of Lara Croft, but even she can’t save the movie from a senseless plot and action sequences with no emotional impact.

I suppose that means that everyone went to see Angelina, but left before they fell asleep. Would you stay awake for this?

Prince of Persia rated 25% amongst top critics on RT, yet the consensus was that

It doesn’t offer much in the way of substance, but Prince of Persia is a suitably entertaining swashbuckler — and a substantial improvement over most video game adaptations.

There was also a lot less boob. Unless you consider Mr. Gyllenhaal a boob, in which case there was tons of boob in this movie.

Still, $300 million is no great feat for a Disney summer blockbuster, so it seems that we still have a ways to go before video game movies really start bringing in the moolah. Personally, I’d take a great adaptation over a high grossing piece of shit any day. But then again, I don’t work in Hollywood.

Kim Kardashian In Talks To Do WHAT?!

A little over a month ago, one of the worst environmental crises in US history when an oil rig exploded and began to leak gallons and gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In less than 50 days, the oil has covered the area of multiple US states, and is universally accepted to be one of the, if not the, biggest tragedies of the year. However, in light of what I’m about to break to you, BP’s oil spill could actually become a runner-up* to the worst tragedy of the year.

And what tragedy am I talking about? Kim Kardashian replacing Angelina Jolie in the next Tomb Raider film. Now, I think we can all agree that the Tomb Raider series hasn’t exactly produced the Citizen Kane of our generation, but I never thought they’d think bringing in the buxom brunette from Keeping Up Wtth The Kardashians would make the series better. Of course, if this report holds true, then “better” might not exactly be what they’re going for.

Kim is wanted to play a far more comic-strip version of Lara which would be shot in 3-D and aimed at a teen audience.

I made a pie graph of the parts of that sentence I like, where red represents parts I like, and blue represents parts I do not like.

*Editor’s note: I joke, but what’s currently going on in the Gulf of Mexico is absolutely gut-wrenching and terrible. Of course I don’t truly think that Kim Kardashian being cast as the lead in Tomb Raider is a disaster on the level of BP’s oil spill, but unless Kim Kardashian is actually a closet thespian, I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t exactly a great idea. Of course, that’s just my opinion, and not the opinion of my employers or anyone else that writes for Ripten blah blah blah copyright 2010. By the way, it is surprisingly difficult to find a SFW photograph of Kim Kardashian. I am just saying.

Foreign Pringles Commercial Proves Video Games Are More Fun with Crunch and Nudity

In a contrasting string of commercials, Pringles stack their chip against bagged brand competitors. The premise is simple — “not every chip gets you to the crunch.”

And as you’ll see in the Silent Hill video game scenario below, when you finally do get to the “crunch”, a strip teasing Lara Croft will be waiting. The “squelching” non-crunch counterpart is, well, not as entertaining. Enjoy.

Jolie Not Happy That Fox May Play Croft

A while back there was a rumor making its way around the internet saying that Megan Fox may play Lara Croft in the next Tomb Raider movie, as it was an origin story that called for a younger actress. This rumor finally made its way to Angelina Jolie and she is none too pleased.

It seems Jolie thinks that Fox steals a lot of things from her, like her style and her tattoos. I don’t think that she has any valid reason to be upset, as she couldn’t play Lara Croft in an origin story anyway. Why does she even give a crap?

Think of electioneering as a real-time strategy game. You make your moves at the same time as your opponent, and in the end whoever has the most points (votes) wins. While politicos may scratch their heads at the pick of relatively inexperienced Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate, gamers will know that there is no better ally on your side than a bear-hunting, gun-toting babe in a fur-lined parka.

A reader on political blogger Andrew Sullivan’s site wrote:

It would be a big mistake to dismiss Palin’s pop-cultural appeal. It’s clear she was chosen solely to game the system, and the Republicans OWN that play. I’m sure they expect her to be a lure for the female (not feminist) vote, and they already have a lock on the over 60 white males.

In addition, I predict a bonus unintended consequence for McCain among middle class/educated/post-college/pre-adult white males. A demographic label that follows many into their late 30s and currently trends for Obama. Basically the gamers/Gen-Xers/Seth Rogen/Will Farrell crowd. The GOP has already rolled out video of Palin in snugly tailored fatigues, combat boots and tight t-shirt brandishing a weapon at a meet-n-greet with the Alaska National Guard in Kuwait. I’m sure they’re scrambling to find more. “Sarah Palin as Laura Croft” will leave these guys drooling like zombies.

Personally, I would have gone with Sonic the Hedgehog. He could probably help fund the campaign with his treasure trove of gold rings.
