This week in NintendoWares features the first chapter in Tales of Monkey Island hitting the WiiWare, along with The Three Musketeers: One for All! and HB Arcade Cards, a mixture of card games including Rummy, Hearts and Solitaire. The DSiWare gets another puzzle game (not a surprise) with Sudoku Student releasing for the popular handheld. And what about the Virtual Console you ask? Well, it seems as if Nintendo has run out of classics to ressurect as this is the second week in a row with no Virtual Console release. Use the Unit Converter to turn one unit of measure into another (such as length, weight, volume, age and others), or track the history of calculations you’ve performed with ease. Play as Eduardo and his fellow toaster buddies as you fire an assortment of pastries at all kinds of dastardly food products. Hop onto laser-mounted scooters and fly across the screen in rocket packs, and learn to cooperate with your teammates or simply annoy each other in an awesomely fun way by throwing each other around the screen. The choice is up to you.

“Welcome to the Fantasy Zone. Get ready!” This is the greeting given to you as you start Space Harrier, but you don’t have much time to take this advice. Even as the words are being spoken, your Harrier warrior is already charging into battle. Toting a huge laser gun under his arm, the Space Harrier can either run along the checkerboard ground or freely fly through the sky. Either way, he’s always heading forward into the hostile 3-D world. As you progress, hordes of strange creatures and robots fly toward you. Fast reflexes are required to dodge their incoming fire. Environmental hazards can be a problem, too. Take care not to run into any trees or stone structures. If you need a bit of a morale boost, just defeat a boss, and the narrator will remind you that “you’re doing great!”

Nintendo is back on their game this week with four new downloadable game releases for the DSiWare, WiiWare and Virtual Console. The most notable game has to be Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! for the DSiWare, which was announced last week at E3. Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again! Everyone, that is, except Donkey Kong, who was too late to get in! Donkey Kong decides to crash the party and kidnaps Pauline along the way! Can Mario and his Mini Marios rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong’s clutches yet again? Make sure to explore the Construction Zone, where you’ll find all the tools needed to make your own original levels. Today The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask becomes the 300th game available to download for the Wii’s Virtual Console. You do remember Majora’s Mask, don’t you? It was the other Zelda game on the Nintendo 64, the one that required that expansion pack thing. Majora’s Mask wasn’t nearly as popular as Ocarina of Time was, but it surely was a great game, so if you didn’t get a chance to play it the first time around, Wii owners now have a second chance.

In 1-Player mode, you can select one of five different computer opponents, as well as turn the background music off, adjust sound effects and access in-game help features. Also, during the match, you can redo your last move, save the game at any point or resign from the game. After the match has ended, you can review each move made during the match. While reviewing the match in this way, you can resume that match at any point.

One to four players can play Penguins & Friends at the same time, provided they can handle the polar cold. The board is made up of ice blocks with a set number of fish under them. The ice blocks are hexagonal and form a structure like a beehive. The starting position of the ice blocks can change, creating different game boards.

Someone or something has begun building huge towers on the sea floor without a construction license. Nintendo have thrown us PAL customers a bone today, releasing The Ledgend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask on the Virtual Console Wii service. with a price of 1000 Wii Points, about €10. It’s a good price for what is widely considered as the hidden gem of the Zelda series. It’s one of the few Zelda games that doesn’t follow the “Princess is taken away, Link saves the Princess” storyline; instead, a dark tale involving the most terrifying character of all time, Tingle. Remember, you’ll need a GameCube or Classic Controller to play this, as it’s an N64 game.

Two more additions to the Virtual Console and WiiWare this Monday. One is a space shooter and the other is a platformer from the 80s. Hit the jump to find out what they are and how many Wii points they’ll run you.

Onslaught (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated T for Teen—Animated Blood, Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Onslaught is an FPS that puts you in the middle of a futuristic war between humans and insectoid aliens. Become part of the Elite Interstellar Strike Force and fight against an overwhelming onslaught of alien life forms. Enjoy the rush of mowing down wave after wave of aliens with machine guns, grenades and more. Feel your heart pound as you battle gigantic boss aliens. Beyond the normal game, Onslaught includes additional modes that let you play with rivals from around the world using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Team up with as many as three other players in Free Battle mode, or compete on special maps to see who can get the most points by killing enemies before time runs out in Ranking Battle mode.

INTERNATIONAL KARATE™ (Commodore 64, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older—Mild Violence, 500 Wii Points): INTERNATIONAL KARATE is a simulation of a karate tournament in which one person can play against the computer or two players can compete against each other. During the game, you’ll fly to various locations around the world. In all stages of the game, a wise old judge will watch over you and award you either a half-point or a full point, depending on how successful a hit has been.

Pitstop II™ (Commodore 64, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Pitstop II was the first game that brought serious auto racing action to the computer screen—the thrill of battling an opponent, the excitement of fighting for the lead out on the track, and the suspense of struggling to be the first out of the pits. Third-person graphics and a split-screen display allow one or two players to experience the challenge of car racing head-to-head. Six of the world’s toughest tracks are waiting, from Brands Hatch and its hairpin turns to the mile-long straight of Vallelunga. You can practice against the computer, but nothing will compare to the fun of racing against another person. Indeed, Pitstop II proves that car racing was never meant to be a solo sport.

Another Monday, another week of new downloadable games for your Wii’s Virtual Console and WiiWare Channels. Hone your skills in Practice mode, learning all the cool techniques you need to be a true hustler. Use the edit feature to create your own challenge and nail the trick shot you’ve always dreamed of sinking. Pull off an amazing shot and show everyone who’s the biggest shark in the pool.

In this journey, the island hopping of Mike’s original adventure gives way to traveling through time and visiting locations around the world. And you never know what famous historical figures may appear along the way, giving Mike helpful advice or useful items. Luckily, Mike also has a wider range of weapons and improved play control on his side, so he may yet stand a chance against Zoda. Can you help Mike stand the test of time and save the world again?

Monday again folks, and that means more releases of your favorite old-school games on the Virtual Console and a few new picks for the WiiWare. The VC gets a fan favorite in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, but not the pretty Genesis version, but the crappy Sega Master System version, which was also on the Game Gear. Not bad, but the Genesis version is already on the Virtual Console, so who want to download this version?

The WiiWare gets two random games, as usual, in Bruiser and Scratch, a game that involves a cat and a dog solving mysteries together, and Hockey Allstar Shootout, a game of shootouts between you and the goalie, but oddly enough, there aren’t any real “Allstars” in the game.

Bruiser and Scratch (Steel Penny Games, Inc., 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): Bruiser and Scratch are stranded in a strange world with a dark secret. Their only hope in finding a path home is to unravel the mystery of this place, one oversized puzzle at a time. Along the way, they make new friends and meet up with old adversaries, each of whom plays a role in their journey. Bruiser and Scratch offers a number of tutorial levels to bring the player up to speed gradually. The story unfolds over 48 puzzles and six landscapes. And for players who can’t get enough, Challenge mode offers 75 additional puzzles that range from child’s play to mind-bogglingly difficult.

Hockey Allstar Shootout (Big Blue Bubble Inc., 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Use the Wii Remote™ controller as a stick and take the shot as you compete in three exciting Hockey Skills Challenges. In Head 2 Head, it’s just you versus the best goalies in the world in a five-puck shootout. Race against the clock to post the most goals in the fastest time. The three difficulty levels will place you against three increasingly talented goalies, each donning the jersey of their home country. In two-player mode, each player will take a turn as shooter and as goalie, and the player who scores the most goals in five shots is the winner. In Sharp Shooter, you post a high score in one of three difficulty levels by breaking as many targets as you can. Each time a shot fails to break a target, an X will appear in the upper left corner. Three misses and the game is over. Power Shot has you take your best shot and watch the Shot-Speed Clock light up. You have three attempts to blast the fastest shot you can, and only the best speeds will grace the high score list.

Sonic The Hedgehog™ 2 (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Play the popular Sonic The Hedgehog sequel, made specifically for the SEGA MASTER SYSTEM. Sonic returns home to his island just in time to see Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik) run off with Tails. In fact, Dr. Eggman has kidnapped all of Sonic’s animal friends and placed them in robotic mind-controlling suits. He demands the six Chaos Emeralds, hidden on the island, in exchange for their safe return. Explore underground mine shafts, dash through underwater tunnels and hang glide through the clouds in Sonic’s search for the Chaos Emeralds. Once Sonic’s found them all, he must face off with the evil Dr. Eggman and thwart his plan for global domination.

Okay, it’s Monday again folks. That means another update for the Wii Shop Channel, specifically the Virtual Console and WiiWare services. The Virtual Console gets a Sega Genesis fave, and one of the weirdest super hero names ever, in Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure. That title is funny as hell! As for the WiiWare, Boingz and Sudoku Challenge! are the two games that came out this week.

Sudoku Challenge! (Digital Leisure Inc., 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Now’s your chance to play the brain-busting puzzle game taking the world by storm. With over 100 million Sudoku puzzles, you’ll never see the same puzzle twice in Sudoku Challenge! You can select the classic nine-by-nine Sudoku game boards as well as Grand Sudoku, which challenges you to complete five intersecting Sudoku boards simultaneously. Just a beginner? Don’t worry-with three difficulty options, even a novice player can complete a Sudoku with ease. But if you’re a seasoned pro, challenge yourself in Expert mode and test your true skills. It’s time to get your thinking cap on and see how many Sudoku puzzles you can conquer.

Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3 (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older – Alcohol and Tobacco Reference, Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Move over, generically buff action heroes. Strong Bad is here to show you how it’s done in his hand-crafted cinematic masterpiece, Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective. You play Dangeresque, a dirty cop in pursuit of a little action and several big sacks of cash. Can our hero stay alive long enough to defeat his arch-nemesis, save the world and get the girl? Looks like he’s gonna have to jump.

Target Toss Pro: Bags (Incredible Technologies, 1-16 players, Rated E for Everyone, 700 Wii Points): Target Toss Pro: Bags is a new video game based on beanbag toss, the nation’s hottest backyard and tailgate sensation. Bags – or Cornhole, as it’s called in some parts of the country – originated in the Midwest in the 1960s and has since become a staple at outdoor social events from coast to coast. Similar to horseshoes, Bags is a deceptively simple yet extremely competitive game where players try to toss beanbags into a hole in a slightly raised platform or “box” for points. Whether at a tailgate party or a summer barbecue, the game has become a social focal point, and the unmistakable thud of bags hitting the box is now a universal party soundtrack.

SPACE INVADERS: The Original Game (Super NES™, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Experience one of gaming’s iconic franchises in this perfect rendition of the arcade classic. In the 29th century, without warning, warships broke through the sky, loaded with fiendish aliens. They rained down fire, bombs, missiles and napalm, leaving the land barren and inhospitable. Humanity was enslaved and Earth became known as the Forgotten World. In a hidden place, a group of brave humans raised two male children in secret. They brought up the young men as warriors, training them for battle. The two warriors emerged as armed machines of might, strength and super power – the Nameless Ones. Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam (Virtual Toys, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Animated Blood, Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam is a frenetically active cooking game in which you must serve food to your customers as quickly as possible. This could be a simple task, but the customers aren’t very patient, and you’ll find a multitude of annoying insects that make the noble mission of satisfying your small gourmets’ stomachs much more difficult. In the game’s Career Mode, your goal is to become the best chef in the city. To do so, you have to prove your worth by cooking in four fantastic restaurants: the Hot Dog, Hamburger, Pizza and Mexican Restaurant. Enjoy playing Yummy Yummy with your family, serving delicious food to the most surprising characters: vampires, ninjas, extraterrestrials and mafia thugs. Put on your chef’s hat, sharpen your knives and turn up the heat.

If I had to choose one of these titles, it’ll have to be the classic Mega Man 3, of course. With Mega Man 9 still fresh, it only makes sense to keep on pushing the Blue Bomber classics. As for the other two games, don’t know much about them myself, but they might be worth checking out if you’ve got some extra Wii Points to spend.

Those who hunger for retro Mega Man goodness will be happy to know that Mega Man 1 hits Nintendo’s VC this Monday, and the much anticipated Mega Man 9 will be available in September. The quoted portion below is directly from the official Capcom blog.

To prepare all you Mega Man fans for the release of Mega Man 9 in September, we’re going to offer you the opportunity to play the game that started it all. The orginal Mega Man game returns on the Virtual Console this Monday, August 4, 2008. Yes, that’s right. Brush up on your old school skills and prepare for some cool contests we have in store. We also plan to re-release Mega Man 2 in early September as well.

As great as this new sounds, there’s one thing that will make your Mega Man experience even better — some original Mega Man art by the man who created him. Don’t forget to sign up for our Keiji Inafune Mega Man art contest before it’s too late.

Nintendo’s WiiWare service is now available in the U.S., with six downloadable titles at launch. WiiWare has been available in Japan since March and with around fifty titles that have either been announced or released for the service, so we can expect Nintendo to have plenty of games coming in the next few weeks.

However, with the release of the WiiWare service, Nintendo decided not to release any new Virtual Console games this week. But with six titles already to download, VC fanatics should have more than enough to keep them content until next week.

Here’s a quick look at the six launch titles available to download, from the press release.

* Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Square Enix, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,500 Wii Points): FFCC: My Life as a King takes a legendary franchise and launches it into the realm of simulation gaming. Players are challenged to rebuild a kingdom, leading its young king on a path of discovery through an adventure bristling with mystery and intrigue.

* LostWinds (Frontier Development, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone – Mild Fantasy Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): A fresh, enchanting platform adventure that puts the power of the wind in the palm of your hand – from raging tornados to the gentlest breeze. You’ll wield your Wii Remote controller to power Toku’s jumps and glides, suspend and smash enemies, meet friends and solve puzzles using LostWinds’ novel, intuitive and playful control system.

* Defend your Castle (XGen Studios, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone – Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): Defend your Castle takes place on a grassy plain surrounded by invaders. You are the commander of your castle, and it is your duty to fling the invading enemies sky-high, watching them plummet to their demise. As you progress, add powerful spells and upgrades to your arsenal for repelling the attacks. How long can you hold them off?

* Pop (Nnooo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 700 Wii Points): Pop bubbles to score points and stop the timer from running out. Pop can be enjoyed by anyone – casual gamers can simply play to pop bubbles and keep the game moving, whereas advanced players will need to pick their shots rapidly and accurately and generate combos to maximize their score.

* V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack (High Voltage Software, Inc., 1-4 players, Rated T for Teen – Simulated Gambling, 700 Wii Points): V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack re-creates the casino experience, with fully animated players and a realistic Las Vegas dealer. Single players can increase their bankrolls, while multiple players can engage in a head-to-head mini-blackjack tournament.

* TV Show King (Gameloft, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): TV Show King transforms your living room into a real TV quiz show studio where you’ll face the challenge of answering more than 3,000 questions across six different categories. Compete against family and friends and use your Wii Remote controller in original ways to make it to the finals to see who can win the greatest amount of cash in one final, deciding duel.

MI6.co.uk, a James Bond fan site, reports that Rareware is supposedly trying to remake Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo Wii virtual console and Xbox Live Arcade, but with all of the James Bond elements removed, as to avoid any legal issues between Nintendo and Microsoft.

The rumor surfaced a while back about the classic Nintendo 64 game heading to Xbox Live Arcade, but as we reported in early January, Microsoft and Nintendo couldn’t come to an agreement regarding monetary issues, so Rare canned it.
Well now it seems the developer may be back at it, but with no Bond. I’m not sure how I feel about that, honestly. Part of me feels that it’s better than nothing, but at the same time, removing all of the 007 elements is going to rip the nostalgia right out of it, which is a very large part of the appeal. I’ll definitely be waiting to see how this turns out before committing to a purchase.

In a move that should make those like me who hate to spend money happy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will include trial versions of several classic Nintendo games.

Dubbed “Masterpieces,” the game disc will come loaded with timed demos of various virtual console games. It’s a brilliant idea, in my opinion. For the fans that haven’t been around since the beginning, now they can see where all their favorite brawlers came from – free of charge!

The confirmed titles so far are Ice Climber (NES), Super Mario Bros (NES), The Legend of Zelda (NES), Kid Icarus (NES), Kirby’s Adventure (NES), Super Metroid (SNES), and Star Fox 64 (N64).

Some of the titles will also come with existing saved data, so you can sample segments all throughout the game. Smash Bros. Dojo also confirms the existence of hidden titles, giving us just one more mystery to look forward to solving when Super Smash Bros. Brawl hits in March.

Perhaps a downloadable demo of the game? They had demos for recent press events and at E for All, right? Surely such a thing would be easily done. Or maybe there would be a super-special update on Sakurai’s Smash Bros. DOJO!! (their emphasis) blog, which is updated five nights a week, despite several updates that some anxious fans felt were lacking.

If nothing else, maybe there would be a surprise release of the original Nintendo 64 version of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii’s Virtual Console. Any of the three would prove to be so easy a way to say “I’m sorry for the delay,” right?

Unfortunately, it just was not to be; the sun rose around the world on December 3rd, and Nintendo went about their business as usual. No Brawl demo. And while a little interesting, the Dojo update only spoke a little about the ability to create a Friends List within the game, to allow for online play using a numbered code system separate from the Wii’s standard Friend Codes.

And on Virtual Console? Not a single Brother to be Smashed, Super or otherwise. Instead, Nintendo opted for a trio of unrelated releases in the form of the E-rated NES shooter ZANAC, which features 12 levels that adjust their difficulty according to how well you play. From the days of the Genesis and a time when the 2D fighter reigned supreme, Eternal Champions has given rise to nine fighters who compete with one another to face the titular Eternal Champion, the ultimate fighter in the universe.

Last but not least, the TurboGrafx16 heralds an E-rated adventure that some may recognize and some may not… perhaps all at the same time. Dynastic Hero is but one of many titles given a franchise which features minor differences between its various iterations, including names such as Wonder Boy and Adventures Island, both of which have already made appearances on Nintendo’s Wii Wayback Machine.

Featuring a cast of insect-based characters in a land known as Tarron, Prince Dyna of Beetras goes to the insects’ aid against the invading forces of the evil Drilkor Empire. In addition to fending off foes, Dyna also engages in multiple-choice quizzes and ocarina sessions to continue along his journey.

So, despite nothing special happening (yet, anyway) to help make our Smash-less Christmas a little less painful, one might submit that there have been worse Virtual Console updates, and at the very least… they didn’t delay the game again.

Double Dribble is a port of the NES basketball game, Vegas Stakes is a port of the Genesis Vegas-simulation, and Ecco Jr. is a port of the Genesis dolphin adventure.

None of the games are the “classics” that Nintendo chooses to describe them as. More disappointing, however, is that the recent press release decided to use the term “Wii-kly”.

These will make a total of 175 games for the service, which hosts some of the greatest games ever. Pilotwings is set to arrive on the machine in the future, which is a great deal more exciting then these three games.
