Nintendo announces Excitebike World Rally

by Sam Naylor on October 27, 2009

Nintendo have announced via the above children’s television show video that a brand new side-scrolling Excitebike game will be coming to WiiWare. As you can see, it’s pretty much an updated version of the original- it also includes a track editor and even WiFi play. I’m kind of surprised at my reaction to this, as I’m usually quite cynical about these things- I think it looks pretty cool.

I loved Excitebike when I was younger. I don’t know why; perhaps it was just that it had a good sense of speed and timing the jumps and angles could be quite entertaining. It doesn’t really capture my attention the way it did then any more, but this new one looks decent. Maybe it was just that the presenters reverted me to a younger state of mind with their patronising banter.

This week in NintendoWares features the first chapter in Tales of Monkey Island hitting the WiiWare, along with The Three Musketeers: One for All! and HB Arcade Cards, a mixture of card games including Rummy, Hearts and Solitaire. The DSiWare gets another puzzle game (not a surprise) with Sudoku Student releasing for the popular handheld. And what about the Virtual Console you ask? Well, it seems as if Nintendo has run out of classics to ressurect as this is the second week in a row with no Virtual Console release. Hit the jump for the full list of new Nintendo DLC this week and a brief description of each title.

NintendoWares: My Life as a Darklord

by Rangebar Merani on July 20, 2009

darklord0701

The big release this week in Nintendo downloads is obviously Square Enix’s follow-up to My Life as a King, Final Fantasy Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord for the WiiWare. I never got a chance to play My Life as a King, but I’m curious to play the sequel as I here it’s much of the same gameplay but with a few different elements.

The Virtual Console gets dissed this week as it lacks any downloads, but the WiiWare picks up the slack with two other downloads in Battle Poker and 5 Spots Party. The DSiWare gets on in the fun as well with another edition to the Art Style series with Zengage. Hit the jump for a description of each download and how much they’ll cost.

While Americans have been clamoring for Club Nintendo’s prizes to come to our fair country for a while now, only now has Nintendo followed through and given us some prizes for our years of Nintendo fanship. And boy was it worth the wait. If you have enough “Nintendo Coins” to be considered a gold membership (6 games registered, 300 coins), you’ll be able to download a snazzy Club Nintendo 2010 calendar. However, if you’re determined enough to be a Platinum member (12 games registered, 600 coins), then you’ll be elligible to choose between two prizes- an authentic repica Mario hat, which you can see after the jump, or a WiiWare download for Doc Louis’s Punch-Out!!

While I’d be plenty happy with the cool hat, the WiiWare version of Doc Louis’s Punch-Out!! seems way more interesting. A one-on-one WiiWare version of Punch-Out!! that only features Doc Louis sounds great, especially since you don’t have to own Punch-Out!! for the Wii to play it. I’ve always wanted to fight that guy. He keeps offering me some of his chocolate bar, but I never get to taste hte sweet chocolately goodness. Well now it’s just you & me in the ring, Doc. Winner takes all- provided I get enough Nintendo coins.

That chocolate bar is mine.

pvz

In an interview with Kombo, PopCap Games’ PR director Garth Chouteau has noted that the highly acclaimed Plants vs. Zombies will follow its cousin Peggle onto other platforms: XBLA, PSN- even the DS and iPhone. Chouteau is quoted by Kombo on the matter:

…Peggle for XBLA is a good example of a game that we took that was popular on the PC and we spent probably twice as long as anyone else would have figuring how to make that game really good for Xbox and Xbox Live Arcade, and I think you will see that with Plants Vs. Zombies–I don’t know the exact order in which that game will make its way onto other platforms, but it’s certainly been successful enough, quickly enough, that we’re looking at other platforms and deciding where we’ll take that game next…

Since PvZ was such a success, both commercially and critically, it can only be good news that it can come to a bigger audience. I only hope that they make a DS version as good as Peggle DS.

Today The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask becomes the 300th game available to download for the Wii’s Virtual Console. You do remember Majora’s Mask, don’t you? It was the other Zelda game on the Nintendo 64, the one that required that expansion pack thing. Majora’s Mask wasn’t nearly as popular as Ocarina of Time was, but it surely was a great game, so if you didn’t get a chance to play it the first time around, Wii owners now have a second chance.

Also available today to download is Art Style: PiCTOBiTS for the DSiWare, Silver Star Chess and Square Enix’s Crystal Defenders R2 for the WiiWare. Hit the jump for a description of each title and how much they’ll cost you. Read more…

Konami (Sort of) Announces Contra Rebirth for WiiWare

by Rangebar Merani on May 8, 2009

That’s right, Contra is hitting the WiiWare old-school style! Konami has quietly announced that Contra Rebirth will be hitting the WiiWare next week, May 12, in Japan for 1000 Wii Points and with two-player co-op play.

It’s kind of odd how they managed to keep this title under wraps for this long and that it gets discovered on a Konami product page just a week before its release. It’s still unsure if the game is a remake or not, but Konami says it’s a new work. We’ll just have to wait and see.

All you Animal Crossing fans will be happy to know that the DSiWare is offering both an Animal Crossing Calculator and Clock for you to download to your DSi today. And they are only 200 DSi Points! Why anyone would pay for either of the two items (unless you were absolute die hard Animal Crossing fans) is totally beyond me. Moving on, the WiiWare and Virtual Console each offer one game to download for your Wii. Hit the jump to see the list of Nintendo downloads this week and how much they’ll run you. Read more…
