If Ikaruga and Geometry Wars exchanged drunken looks at a bar after-hours and stumbled into eachother’s arms, only to later regret their cheap hotel-room fling and the fact that they forgot to use protection, the result might look something like Schizoid.

A co-op game where the red and blue ships can only destroy their own types of colors, Schizoid also has the glory of being the first game pushed out the door via Xbox Live Arcade’s hot new development community, XNA.

From developer Torpex Games, Schizoid contains online and offline co-op, an AI partner for single player mode, and a faux-German Uberschizoid mode where you can control both ships at the same time. Although this seems more like a refinement of the frantic shooter genre, maybe Geometry Wars 2 can also take a few pointers from Schizoid.

Meanwhile, check out this brain-melting quote from Bill Dugan, the President of Torpex Games:

“Although it has been reported that Schizoid will ‘make your brain melt and ooze out of your ears’, I want to reassure gamers that in our testing we found no evidence of actual brain liquefaction.”

If your brain does melt while playing this game, your family now knows who to sue.

Chris Satchell, head of XNA, has given a few more tantalizing details of what to expect from Microsoft’s community-driven game development tools, as well a few more details on how the community will be used to self-moderate the games produced. He also talks about what his hopes are for the service, so read on for more.

With around a quarter-million strong user base already, there are sure to be plenty of games produced for people to play. The trick is to make sure that only the best gets brought to the top. In an interview with games industry magasine Develop, Satchell talks about how user generated content made using XNA (which stands for “XNA’s Not Acronymed”) will translate to the Xbox Live Community Games to be downloaded and played on any Xbox 360.

Referring to the bold step of giving the community the power of moderation, Satchell said that “we don’t want to be the arbiters of what’s good and bad content, we want to put the power in the hands of the community and ask them to just be truthful about what’s in their game so that people can make an informed decision.” Adding that there will be strict guidelines in place to prevent abuse of the feedback systems.

To further secure the relativity open platform from malicious code, Satchell reiterated the fact that each game will run inside a sandbox, meaning it wont have access to anything outside of what it is allowed.

Once your game has been peer-reviewed and deemed worthwhile, it will be possible for it to be distributed via a subsection of the Xbox Live Marketplace. As Satchell discusses in the interview however, it has not yet been decided if you will have to pay for this privilege. He also pointed out that if your game is a success, it will be relativity straightforward to re-compile the game as a full blown Xbox Live Arcade title and distribute it accordingly.

For more information on the XNA Creators Club and to download the XNA Game Studio visit the official XNA site here.

As you may have noticed, Day Three exploits are going up a little later than usual. Unfortunately, we had a run-in with the Blaznatz chewing up our bandwidth, so we were unable to get a good connection. Damn him and his chainsaw bayonet…

We’ve decided to combine our day three info with day four, which would officially make this Ripten’s GDC 08 Coverage: Day Seven. Read on for all the goodness.

A lot of stuff happened over the past two days. Everything will be explained in more detail by the peeps that were there, so don’t bust my balls if I don’t deliver the full monty right now.

We got a sneak peak at a bunch of upcoming Xbox Live Arcade games, courtesy of the XNA dev tool. There were a few titles that actually haven’t been announced yet, so stay tuned for that.

We also met with the Zeitguyz team for Recoil: Retrograd, and saw quite a bit of Havok stuff (which you can read about here).

Jon ran off and did a bunch of interviews while Chad and I went to the Microsoft keynote. A lot of good stuff was talked about there, including Ninja Gaiden II, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, and XNA 2 — er, just XNA. Sorry, I got on a roll there with the 2s.

We got some coverage of the IGF and Game Developer Awards, had a Q&A with Sid Meier, saw new footage of Mercenaries 2, Prototype, and The Force Unleashed, saw RealTime Worlds’ new MMO, hung out with the peeps from X-Play, and had a quiet evening with Will Wright.

Of course there are other things we did, too, like your mom. Oh, snap! Seriously, though, we attended quite a few events and will give you the complete story shortly.

In the meantime, rest easy knowing that I was only once almost run over by a speeding fucktard in a BMW, and Chad was kind enough to half almost attempt to save me. Thanks Chad!

We also had a kind soul offer to taxi us back to our hotel for just slightly more than the cost of taking an actual taxi, but this ride had the added thrill of almost getting us murdered. The dude was kind, but very strange. He called us “country bumpkins” and never really answered me when I specifically asked whether or not he was going to kill us. I take that as a definite “maybe”, but perhaps he just didn’t do it because he knew we were expecting it.

Moral of the story here, kids, is that you should never cross the street — ever, and under no circumstances should you get in someone’s car before asking if they are going to kill you. Wise words from your good pals at Ripten.

After our previous report on Surfer Girl’s GDC’08 predictions, she has since blamed sleep deprivation for her original comments. We can, however, still confirm the six games we revealed, along with further titbits.

In an apparent lapse of concentration, Surfer Girl (or one of the few Surfer Girls as we presume) previously let the games of GDC ‘08 slip, or at least she made unconfirmed predictions. She has now removed all of her comments from the article, stating in an update:

Note to self: Don’t answer things when half-asleep leaves rooom for error.
Note to self: Don’t type things when half-awake leaves room for errorr.
Note to self: Proofread.
Note to self: Go back to sleep.

As with the nature of these things, any listed titles are of course rumours and Surfer Girl does not act as any sort of confirmation. And yes, we noted the irony in the spelling of “errorr” too. Get some sleep Surfer Girl.

However, nothing has changed from our predictions. The Final Fantasy XIII engine will be presented in a tutorial by Square Enix, and we’re hopeful that there’ll be extensive footage of this previously unseen game.

The Force Unleashed engine will be on show, along with a discussion on Far Cry 2’s procedural storytelling. Pandemic will be presenting Mercenaries 2: World in Flames’ destructible environment, and ID Software’s Rage engine has a high chance of making an appearance.

There will be a walk through of the Frostbite engine (Battlefield: Bad Company), in addition to three big Fable 2 announcements. You can also expect new footage of Sony’s HOME and XNA announcements from Microsoft.

There is a chance that you’ll see the first footage of Resistance 2, since Insomniac will be discussing the improvements they have made with their PS3 engine. However, if we don’t see the game at GDC, I’m certain we’ll see it elsewhere very soon.

It is unknown whether the public will get to see any of this, but at least you’ll hear about it from us.
